Are you a strategic thinker who enjoys getting hands-on with complex mine planning challenges? Sandfire is seeking an experienced Principal Mining Engineer to provide corporate technical leadership and practical planning support across our open pit operations and projects, with a strong focus on Motheo in Botswana.
In this pivotal role, you will bridge corporate strategy and site execution, working closely with site and corporate teams to support Life of Mine (LoM) planning, open pit design, operational optimisation and Ore Reserve reporting. You will bring deep technical expertise, commercial judgement and recent operating experience to help develop, challenge and refine planning assumptions, evaluate opportunities and risks, and translate planning outcomes into safe, executable and value-accretive business decisions. This role combines strategic leadership with hands-on involvement during key planning cycles, providing the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the future direction and performance of one of Sandfire's key growth assets
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the overseas site-based Life of Mine planning cycle, including plan builds, schedule reviews, scenario analysis, and assumption testing, while providing expert technical input into open pit design, scheduling, and overall optimisation.
- Partner closely with overseas site and corporate teams across mining, geology, geotechnical, processing, and finance to seamlessly align interfaces and drive total mine-to-mill performance and asset value.
- Ensure all planning activities align with Sandfire’s Integrated Planning calendar, MROR requirements, budgets, reforecasts, and business stage gates, while delivering rigorous technical input into due diligence, feasibility studies, and risk or financial evaluations.
- Drive continuous improvement, develop operational systems and regulatory documentation for new projects, and provide technical guidance and mentoring to strengthen planning capability, governance, and decision quality across the business.
- Translate high-level planning outcomes into practical, actionable work programs while resolving planning constraints, data gaps, and cross-functional issues under robust governance and assurance frameworks.
- Prepare comprehensive ore reserves statements and act as the Competent Person for Ore Reserve reporting in accordance with JORC guidelines where applicable, while establishing strong, effective relationships with overseas site-based mining teams to successfully support development and production targets.
What You Will Bring
- A tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering (essential).
- 10+ years of mining industry experience across diverse commodities and methods, featuring senior-level exposure to open pit operations, life of mine and strategic mine planning.
- Proven experience in long-term/strategic planning, pit optimisation, scheduling, value driver analysis,
and working directly with complex planning models and software.
- Demonstrated experience supporting remote international operations from a corporate setting, with the interpersonal skills to influence overseas site-based teams without direct line authority.
- Recent experience with operating open pit mines; international experience, particularly in Africa, will be highly regarded
- Solid commercial and financial acumen, including the ability to interpret production, cost, capital, cash flow and risk trade-offs.
- Advanced understanding of integrated planning, MROR requirements, JORC modifying factors and mine-to-mill value optimisation.
- Experience acting as an Ore Reserve Competent Person as defined by the JORC Code 2012.
- Confidence working hands-on during critical planning periods, including detailed review and preparation of planning inputs, outputs and decision-support material.
- Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and constructive challenge skills across technical, operational and commercial disciplines.
- Competency with Microsoft Office, pit optimisation and mine planning software; experience with Deswik and Alastri is highly regarded.
- Willingness to undertake regular domestic and international travel to support operations and planning cycles.
If you are a practical, commercially minded mining engineer who can combine strategic thinking with hands-on delivery, this role offers the opportunity to influence key planning decisions across Sandfire’s open pit portfolio.
