Overview A government department is seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager (EL2 equivalent) to lead a high-profile strategic cloud migration program. This is a 12-month contract position based in Canberra with a potential 12-month extension. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the migration of workloads from the Department's end-of-life Storage Area Network (SAN) to Microsoft Azure, supporting the Department’s ICT Strategy, Whole of Government cloud initiatives, and Australian Government Information Security standards.
The role is primarily onsite in Canberra with some flexibility for work from home subject to negotiation and operational requirements. Candidates must be able to obtain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) security clearance, with current NV1 preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, governance, and delivery of the Department's Azure cloud migration project.
- Develop and maintain all project artefacts including Project Management Plan, schedule, budget, RAID register, and benefits realisation plan.
- Manage key project outcomes such as migration of SAN workloads to Azure, data rationalisation, security patching, Windows Server 2016 uplift, SQL Server migration, and operational monitoring capability replacement.
- Coordinate internal ICT teams, vendors, and delivery partners to ensure milestones are met.
- Develop and implement transition, cutover, operational readiness, and legacy infrastructure decommissioning plans.
- Proactively manage project risks, issues, assumptions, and dependencies, including timely escalation as needed.
- Ensure compliance with Australian Government security policies,
including the Essential Eight and Information Security Manual (ISM).
- Manage procurement activities and vendor performance effectively.
- Apply FinOps principles for cloud financial management, including cost forecasting, optimisation, transparency, and ongoing cost control.
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial forecasts, budgets, and reports for governance committees.
- Produce high-quality executive reports, briefing materials, committee papers, and presentations.
- Present project updates, risks, and recommendations to Project Boards, Steering Committees, and senior executives.
- Manage stakeholder engagement to ensure successful adoption and operational handover of project outcomes.
- Drive project closure activities, including documentation completion, lessons learned, and infrastructure decommissioning.
- Required Qualifications and Skills
- Proven experience delivering large-scale cloud migration projects within complex enterprise or government ICT environments.
- Demonstrated expertise managing Microsoft Azure infrastructure migration programs from initiation to closure.
- Practical knowledge and application of FinOps principles, including cloud cost forecasting, optimisation, financial governance, and budget management.
- Strong skills in managing project schedules, budgets, risks, dependencies, and vendor relationships.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication, and influencing skills with experience presenting to senior executives, governance boards, and technical teams.
- Relevant Project Management Certification (e.g., Agile, PRINCE2) and experience applying these methodologies in complex projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM), Essential Eight, and Whole of Government ICT policies.
- Experience with Windows Server and SQL Server migration projects, and enterprise storage migration.
- Experience implementing cloud operational monitoring solutions and infrastructure modernisation initiatives.
- Relevant Microsoft Azure certifications, such as Azure Administrator, Azure Solutions Architect, or Azure Fundamentals.

This cloud migration project replaces ageing SAN infrastructure with a scalable Microsoft Azure platform to improve data resilience, security, and operational efficiency.
Contract Details
Engagement: 12 months with an option for a 12-month extension
Location: Canberra (primarily onsite with flexible work-from-home arrangements possible)
Hours: 40 hours per week
Security Clearance: Ability to obtain NV1 minimum (current NV1 preferred)
