Senior Broadacre Crop and Livestock Farmer
Employment Type: Full-time
Salary: AUD $70,000 -$85,000
Location: Tintinara, South Australia
About the Role
Our client, Mount Boothby, is seeking an experienced and hands-on Senior Broadacre Crop and Livestock Farmer to support the day-to-day management and operation of their agricultural enterprise in Tintinara, South Australia.
This is a key farm management position involving the planning, coordination and practical performance of broadacre cropping and livestock production activities. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting crop production, livestock health and welfare, farm machinery and infrastructure, production planning, biosecurity, staff coordination and the efficient use of farm resources.
The role will suit an experienced agricultural professional who is confident working across both cropping and livestock operations and is capable of independently managing day-to-day farming activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate seasonal broadacre cropping activities in line with farm production requirements and seasonal conditions.
- Assist with selecting suitable crops, seed varieties and planting programs based on soil conditions, seasonal forecasts and production objectives.
- Coordinate and undertake cultivation, seeding, fertilising, spraying, crop monitoring and harvesting activities.
- Monitor crop development and implement appropriate strategies to maintain crop health, yield and quality.
- Manage and monitor livestock activities, including the feeding, handling, breeding and general care of animals.
- Regularly monitor livestock health, welfare, body condition and behaviour and arrange appropriate veterinary treatment where required.
- Ensure livestock have adequate access to suitable feed, pasture, fodder and water throughout production periods.
- Coordinate livestock movements and assist with the purchase, sale and transportation of livestock and agricultural produce.
- Monitor and manage weeds, pests, diseases and biosecurity risks across cropping and livestock operations.
- Maintain appropriate biosecurity procedures to protect livestock, crops and farm operations from disease and other agricultural risks.
- Plan and coordinate the use,
operation and maintenance of tractors, harvesting equipment, livestock handling equipment and other farm machinery.
- Monitor the condition and availability of farm infrastructure, including sheds, yards, fencing, water systems, pumps and irrigation equipment.
- Arrange servicing, repairs and preventative maintenance of agricultural machinery, equipment and farm infrastructure.
- Maintain accurate records relating to crop production, livestock, chemical use, machinery, maintenance, stock movements and general farm activities.
- Monitor seasonal and market conditions and contribute to production planning and decisions regarding the purchase and sale of livestock and agricultural produce.
- Use farm management technology and production data to monitor performance and support informed operational decisions.
- Monitor the use of farm resources, including feed, seed, fertiliser, chemicals, fuel and other agricultural inputs, and minimise unnecessary waste.
- Assist with farm budgeting, expenditure monitoring and the efficient allocation of business resources.
- Coordinate day-to-day farming activities with other farm staff, contractors, suppliers and service providers.
- Provide direction and support to farm employees and contractors and assist with training and supervision where required.
- Ensure farming activities are undertaken safely and in accordance with workplace health and safety requirements.
- Maintain clean, safe and well-organised farm facilities, machinery areas and livestock handling areas.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of crop yields, livestock performance, farm efficiency and overall production outcomes.
Skills & Experience
- Minimum 3- 5 years of relevant experience in broadacre farming, livestock production, mixed farming or a closely related agricultural environment.
- Demonstrated experience working across both crop production and livestock operations.
- Practical experience in broadacre crop production, including seeding, fertilising, crop monitoring, spraying and harvesting.
- Experience in livestock management, including animal health, welfare, feeding, handling and general husbandry.
- Strong understanding of seasonal farming practices and agricultural production cycles.
- Experience operating and maintaining tractors, harvesters, loaders and other agricultural machinery.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to identify and respond to machinery and equipment issues.
- Experience managing farm inputs, including seed, fertiliser, chemicals, feed, fuel and other agricultural supplies.
- Good understanding of livestock biosecurity, crop protection, weed and pest management.
- Ability to monitor crop and livestock performance and respond appropriately to changing seasonal conditions.
- Good record-keeping and computer skills, including the ability to use farm management and production systems.
- Strong organisational, planning and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound operational decisions.
- Good communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively with farm staff and contractors.
- Strong commitment to workplace health and safety and responsible farming practices.
Qualifications A relevant qualification in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Animal Science, Crop Production, Farm Management or a related field will be highly regarded.
Relevant practical experience in broadacre cropping, livestock production, grain handling, farm machinery operation, animal husbandry or mixed farming will also be advantageous.
