Role: Senior Java Engineer – AI & Cloud

About the Role

We are seeking experienced Senior Java Engineers to join a Sydney-based engineering team delivering scalable, cloud-native applications and developer platforms.

This is a hands-on engineering role with a strong focus on Java, Spring Boot, microservices, event-driven architecture and AWS , combined with modern DevOps, reliability and observability practices. The team also owns AI-enabled developer support capabilities, providing an opportunity to work with LLM integrations and emerging AI technologies.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and build scalable, high-performance services using Java and Spring Boot .
- Lead the development of microservices, REST APIs and event-driven applications.
- Design data-intensive and distributed solutions using API, microservices, event-driven and serverless architecture patterns.
- Solve complex technical challenges from solution design through development and production deployment.
- Translate business and technical requirements into robust engineering deliverables.
- Develop reusable capabilities and engineering solutions that can be adopted across teams and products.
- Identify and address technical debt using a pragmatic and commercially focused approach.
- Apply Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and sound engineering principles to application and service design.
- Build reliable and observable applications using appropriate monitoring, tracing and operational practices.
- Apply security best practices across applications, credentials, secrets and certificate management.
- Contribute to deployment strategies, production reliability and SRE practices.
- Champion automated testing, quality engineering and continuous delivery.
- Collaborate across engineering, architecture, product and business teams to align technical decisions with business objectives.




- Contribute to AI-enabled developer support tools and emerging engineering capabilities.

Required Skills & Experience

- 5+ years of strong commercial software engineering experience with Java and Spring Boot , building scalable and high-performance enterprise services.
- Proven experience leading and developing microservices, REST APIs and event-driven applications .
- Strong understanding of Domain-Driven Design (DDD) , distributed systems and scalable application architecture.
- Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka and/or RabbitMQ .
- Strong AWS experience across services such as EC2, Lambda, ECS/Fargate, RDS, DynamoDB and CloudWatch .
- Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including PostgreSQL, SQL Server and/or DynamoDB .
- Strong experience with Docker and Kubernetes .
- Experience implementing CI/CD using technologies such as GitHub Actions, TeamCity, Octopus Deploy, AWS CodePipeline and CodeBuild .
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code and automation using Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK and/or Ansible .
- Robust understanding of observability and reliability practices, with exposure to OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana and CloudWatch .
- Good understanding of application security, including Vault, AWS Secrets Manager and certificate management .
- Experience with automated testing practices and methodologies including TDD and BDD .
- Understanding of deployment strategies, production operations and SRE principles .
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills with the ability to take complex engineering solutions from design through to production.

AI & Emerging Technologies

- Experience in AI/ML and LLM-based application integration is highly relevant. Exposure to building AI-driven developer or support tools using LLMs/ChatGPT would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of Model Context Protocol (MCP) , MCP servers or similar AI/plugin integration approaches would also be valuable, as the team supports an AI chatbot focused on developer enablement .
