Project Overview A major Australian organisation has embarked on a data transformation initiative — the Data Modernisation Program — designed to build a modern, cloud-based data and AI capability. The program spans a new Snowflake database platform, migration from legacy systems, an AI workbench, and data products. This role sits within a lean, fast-moving PMO structure, so this comes down to the right personality as much as technical PM capability — the team is looking for someone calm, confident and genuinely strong on PM fundamentals.
Key Responsibilities
- Build a project plan from scratch and own it end to end across 1-2 Data Modernisation workstreams (e.g. Snowflake platform, legacy migration, AI workbench, data products)
- Manage a small number of stream leads, keeping them aligned, accountable and unblocked
- Partner with Program Sponsors, Business Leads and SMEs to define scope, plans, resources and delivery outcomes
- Operate effectively within a complex matrix organisation, driving collaboration across business and technology teams
- Run transparent RAG (red/amber/green) status reporting and manage program governance, risks, issues and dependencies (RAID)
- Develop and maintain integrated plans and frameworks for managing cross-program interdependencies
- Lead and mentor multi-disciplinary project teams to achieve successful outcomes
- Manage own program budget, forecasts and financial reporting (lightweight given the lean PMO structure)
- Drive stakeholder engagement across all levels, including senior managers, and support Steering Committees
- Apply best-practice agile and waterfall methodologies depending on workstream needs
- Support development of target operating models, governance frameworks and business adoption
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Minimum 10+ years' experience delivering large-scale, technology or tech/business transformation projects
- A calm, confident manner under pressure — someone who brings order without creating friction
- Demonstrated ability to build a project plan and governance structure from scratch
- PMP or PRINCE2 certification
- Tertiary qualification in Business, Technology, Engineering or a related discipline
- Comfortable working across both agile and waterfall methodologies in a mixed delivery environment
- Solid technology background with an interest in data and AI (deep AI experience not required)
- Strong foundational PM skills — action tracking, RAID management and RAG reporting — given the volume and complexity of the environment
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams across business, technology, data, architecture, security and operations
- Strong understanding of data platforms, cloud technologies, data migration and analytics delivery
- Strong, natural stakeholder management skills, with the judgement to know when to push and when to be diplomatic
- A collaborative, modest, proactive and reliable communication style — assertive without being dominant or abrupt
Desirable
- Agile, SAFe or Lean Six Sigma certification
- Experience with Snowflake or similar cloud data platforms
