Senior Platform Engineer – Observability
About the Role
As a Senior Platform Engineer – Observability, you will play a key role in defining, building and evolving enterprise observability capability. Working within the Core Platform Engineering team, you will partner with engineering, cloud, platform and security teams to improve how software and platforms are monitored, measured and operated at scale.
This role extends beyond operating observability platforms—you will help define the strategy, roadmap and engineering standards for observability across the organisation while enabling engineering teams through reusable platforms, automation and self-service capabilities.
You will be responsible for driving engineering best practices across logging, metrics, tracing, operational dashboards, alerting, and engineering insights, enabling teams to build highly observable and resilient systems.
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise Observability Strategy

- Define and evolve the enterprise observability strategy, roadmap and target architecture.
- Lead the adoption of observability best practices across engineering teams.
- Partner with Engineering, Cloud, Security and Platform teams to continuously improve engineering operational maturity.
- Identify opportunities to simplify, standardise and automate observability capabilities across the organisation.

Platform Engineering

- Build and evolve reusable observability platforms and self-service capabilities.
- Develop reusable patterns, templates and automation to improve developer experience.
- Treat observability as a platform product with clear roadmaps, customer engagement and continuous improvement.
- Reduce cognitive load for engineering teams through platform automation and engineering guardrails.

Enterprise Engineering Enablement

- Collaborate with multiple engineering teams to uplift observability maturity.
- Define engineering standards and operational expectations for logging, metrics, tracing and alerting.
- Drive adoption of enterprise observability capabilities through enablement, coaching and documentation.
- Contribute to engineering scorecards and operational maturity initiatives.

Observability Engineering

- Design, implement and support enterprise observability solutions across Kubernetes and Azure-hosted workloads.
- Develop dashboards,



alerts and operational insights that improve service reliability and engineering productivity.
- Implement and maintain enterprise telemetry standards across applications and platforms.
- Drive continuous improvement of monitoring, alerting and engineering visibility.

Operational Excellence

- Improve engineering visibility through meaningful dashboards, metrics and reporting.
- Support engineering teams in reducing operational risk and improving service reliability.
- Contribute to Production Readiness and Operational Excellence initiatives.
- Drive adoption of engineering metrics such as DORA and SRE operational practices.

Key Knowledge & Skills
Observability Platforms (Mandatory)

- Extensive experience with Elastic (Elastic Stack) at enterprise scale, including logging, search, dashboards, alerting and observability capabilities.
- Extensive experience implementing and supporting observability platforms across Kubernetes and Azure-hosted workloads.
- Experience creating compelling operational dashboards using Grafana and Kibana.
- Experience configuring and administering enterprise observability platforms such as Dynatrace, Datadog or similar.
- Strong understanding of logging, metrics and distributed tracing concepts.

OpenTelemetry & Monitoring

- Strong working knowledge of OpenTelemetry.
- Experience implementing distributed tracing and metrics.
- Good understanding of OpenMetrics and Time Series Databases (TSDBs).
- Experience defining enterprise telemetry standards.

Cloud & Platform Engineering

- Strong Kubernetes knowledge (preferably Azure AKS).
- Experience supporting Azure workloads including:
- Azure App Services
- Azure Functions
- Azure SQL
- Azure Storage
- Cosmos DB
- Container-based workloads

- Experience designing cloud-native observability solutions.

DevOps & Automation
Broad understanding of:

- Git
- GitHub Actions (or Azure DevOps)
- Octopus Deploy
- Terraform
- Infrastructure as Code




- Containerisation and orchestration
- Cloud-native engineering

Engineering Metrics

- Strong understanding of DORA metrics including:
- Deployment Frequency
- Lead Time for Changes
- Change Failure Rate
- Mean Time to Restore (MTTR)

- Experience using engineering metrics to drive continuous improvement across engineering teams.

Scripting
Extensive experience with:

- PowerShell
- Bash

Communication & Leadership (Critical)

- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to influence engineering teams without direct authority.
- Strong facilitation and collaboration skills across multiple technology domains.
- Ability to present technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience building consensus across engineering teams and platform owners.

Strategy & Roadmaps

- Experience defining platform strategies and multi-year roadmaps.
- Ability to translate organisational objectives into technical capabilities and engineering initiatives.
- Experience driving enterprise-wide technology improvements through collaboration and influence.
- Ability to balance long-term strategic direction with short-term delivery priorities.

Nice to Have

- Experience working within a Platform Engineering organisation.
- Experience defining engineering scorecards, operational maturity models or engineering standards.
- Experience with AI-assisted engineering or observability AI capabilities.
- Software engineering experience (.NET Framework / .NET Core).

What Success Looks Like

- Engineering teams have consistent, enterprise-grade observability capabilities.
- Logging, metrics and tracing are implemented using common engineering standards.
- Observability platforms are easy to consume through self-service and reusable patterns.
- Engineering leaders have meaningful operational insights through dashboards and engineering metrics.
- Platform Engineering is recognised as an enabler of engineering excellence rather than simply an operator of observability tools.
- A explicit enterprise observability strategy and roadmap is established, adopted and continuously evolved in partnership with engineering teams.
