Director of Anaesthesia
We are seeking an accomplished and visionary Director of Anaesthesia to provide strategic, clinical and professional leadership across a high-performing anaesthesia and perioperative service.

Working closely with executive leaders, medical staff, nursing teams and multidisciplinary partners, you will drive service development, strengthen clinical governance, support workforce growth, and ensure the delivery of protected, high-quality, patient-centred care.

About the Role The Director of Anaesthesia is responsible for providing professional and clinical leadership across anaesthesia and perioperative services. Combining contemporary clinical practice with strategic leadership responsibilities, you will ensure services are safe, effective, patient-centred and aligned with organisational objectives.
Clinical Leadership & Governance
- Provide expert specialist anaesthetic services and role-model best clinical practice.
- Lead clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement and risk management initiatives.
- Ensure services align with professional standards, accreditation requirements and evidence-based practice.
- Support the development and implementation of clinical policies, protocols and guidelines.
- Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits and service evaluations.
Service Development & Strategy
- Contribute to strategic planning and service development initiatives.
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement across anaesthesia and perioperative services.
- Identify opportunities to enhance efficiency, patient outcomes and service quality.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support integrated patient care.
Workforce Leadership
- Lead, support and mentor specialist anaesthetists and trainee clinicians.
- Foster a positive, inclusive and high-performing team culture.
- Support workforce planning, recruitment, retention and succession planning activities.
- Participate in performance development, coaching and professional growth initiatives.
Education, Training & Research
- Champion education and professional development across multidisciplinary teams.
- Support training programs for registrars, junior doctors and medical students.
- Promote research, innovation and scholarly activity within the department.
- Maintain accredited training opportunities and encourage lifelong learning.
About You To be successful in this role, you will bring:
Essential
- Specialist registration as an Anaesthetist with the relevant medical registration authority.
- Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) or an equivalent specialist qualification.
- Extensive experience in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine.
- Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership, governance and service improvement.
- Strong communication,
stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills.
- Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development and participation in quality improvement activities.
- A genuine commitment to patient-centred care, clinical excellence and safety.
Desirable
- Previous experience as a Clinical Director, Director, Head of Department or equivalent leadership role.
- Postgraduate qualifications in leadership, management, quality, safety, education or healthcare administration.
- Experience in workforce planning, accreditation, research or medical education.
- Expertise in intensive care, perioperative medicine or a related subspecialty area.
