Senior Technical Officer, Science (Southern Campuses)

The Opportunity

Join UniSC's Academic Support Unit (ASU) in a key leadership role where science, education, and operational excellence come together. As the Senior Technical Officer, you’ll lead and mentor a high‑performing technical team, drive the delivery of safe and innovative practical teaching programs across our Southern Campuses, and partner with academics to create exceptional learning experiences for students. Combining hands‑on technical expertise with strategic leadership, this role offers the opportunity to shape service delivery, build staff capability, and make a lasting impact on the future of science education at one of Australia's fastest‑growing universities.

Responsibilities

- Promote and maintain compliance with legislation, regulations and Australian Laboratory Standards covering Biosafety and Biosecurity, health and safety, and the risk management framework to ensure successful research outcomes;
- Provide technical leadership and specialist expertise to ensure the effective delivery of practical programs, enhancing student learning outcomes across science programs and campuses;
- Act as second in charge to the Team Leader, Science, support the effective management of staff, facilities, and resources to ensure safe and efficient delivery of practical sessions through expert technical support, administration, and safety practices such as risk assessments and equipment maintenance;




- Develop and implement operational strategies to meet staffing requirements across allocated sites, ensuring budget compliance, in collaboration with the Team Leader, Science. Play a key role in maintaining consistent service standards and support workforce planning and development; and
- Plan, troubleshoot, and support the delivery of practical learning activities across allocated sites, ensuring high‑quality clinical learning experiences.

About you

You are a confident technical leader with a strong science background and a passion for enabling high‑quality teaching and learning. You bring a calm, solutions‑focused approach to complex operational environments and are comfortable leading teams across multiple locations. Collaborative by nature, you build trusted relationships with academics, stakeholders, and technical colleagues, and you lead with integrity, clarity, and care.

Qualifications & Experience

- Completion of a tertiary qualification in a science or similar, with at least four years’ of demonstrated experience in supporting science;
- Demonstrated ability to manage technical teams across multiple campuses, ensuring safe, timely, and high‑quality delivery of practical learning experiences;
- Experience managing teams and demonstrated ability to create and develop teams that effectively foster a positive work environment of excellent client support,



continual improvement and professional development including providing training and guidance, effective recruitment, and performance reviews to ensure excellent client service support is provided;
- Experience in change management and mentoring of a team of technical professionals including the ability to establish priorities and manage competing deadlines;
- Comprehensive understanding with a track record of implementing workplace health, safety and wellbeing strategies in a technical setting including overseeing implementation and auditing;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to gain cooperation from the relevant stakeholders, negotiate service level deliverables and manage reporting. Including effectively working with a wide range of stakeholders and personality types;
- Proven experience in providing expert technical advice to academic staff to support the effective implementation of course content and enhance pedagogical outcomes;
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with a high attention to detail; and
