Mornington Shire Council is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Café Attendant / Barista to join our Airport Café team.

The Mornington Shire Council is a Local Government Authority providing range of services to the twenty-three islands of the Wellesley Group located 125kms north-west of Burketown, 200kms west of Karumba and 444kms from Mount Isa, in the southern section of the Gulf of Carpentaria, residing within the State of Queensland. The island is 2.5 hours flight from Cairns.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who is confident working independently and can take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the café. You will be responsible for delivering quality coffee and customer service, maintaining stock levels, preparing basic food and ensuring the café is clean, well-presented and ready for customers.

The successful applicant will be someone who can work with minimal supervision, identify what needs to be done and take initiative to keep the café operating efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare and serve high-quality barista coffee and other beverages.

- Provide friendly, professional and efficient customer service.

- Take customer orders and process sales accurately.

- Use a point-of-sale system to process transactions. Experience with SwiftPOS is preferred.

- Actively engage with customers and identify opportunities to upsell food, drinks and other café products.

- Prepare basic food items in accordance with café procedures.

- Safely reheat and serve prepared food and meals.

- Maintain appropriate food presentation and portion standards.

- Restock fridges, displays, shelves and service areas throughout the day.

- Monitor stock levels and notify the appropriate person when stock reaches established restock/reorder points.

- Assist with receiving, checking and putting away deliveries and stock.

- Rotate stock appropriately and monitor use-by and best-before dates.





- Minimise wastage and report damaged, expired or low-stock items.

- Maintain an organised and well-presented café, including customer and service areas.

- Complete cleaning duties throughout the day and at close of business.

- Follow food safety, hygiene, workplace health and safety and Council procedures.

- Complete opening and closing procedures as required.

- Ensure the café is adequately stocked and prepared for the next trading period.

- Work independently and manage daily priorities with minimal supervision.

- Identify operational issues and communicate them promptly to the appropriate manager.

- Assist with other reasonable café duties as required.

About You

We are looking for someone who is reliable, self-motivated and confident working independently.

You will ideally have:

- A recognised barista qualification and demonstrated barista experience.

- Previous café, hospitality or customer service experience.

- Experience using a POS system; SwiftPOS experience is highly desirable.

- Experience preparing basic food and safely reheating prepared meals.

- Strong customer service and communication skills.

- The ability to confidently upsell and promote café products.

- Good attention to detail and a high standard of presentation.

- Good understanding of stock rotation, restocking and stock control.

- The ability to recognise when stock is approaching minimum/restock levels and communicate this promptly.

- A good understanding of food safety and hygiene requirements.

- Solid organisational and time-management skills.





- The ability to work independently, prioritise tasks and use initiative.

- A positive and flexible attitude.

- Reliability and a strong work ethic.

Working Independently

This position is particularly suited to someone who is comfortable working on their own and taking ownership of the café during their shift.

You will be expected to:

- Keep the café stocked and ready for service.

- Monitor what needs to be done throughout the day.

- Anticipate customer and stock requirements.

- Maintain café presentation without being prompted.

- Identify and communicate stock requirements before items run out.

- Manage competing priorities during busy periods.

- Provide excellent customer service while completing operational duties.

- Ask for assistance when required but otherwise confidently manage your responsibilities.

- Hold an open Australian driver’s license

Working in a Remote Location

Mornington Island is a remote Indigenous community in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Working in a remote location requires flexibility, reliability and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

The successful applicant will need to understand that stock availability, deliveries and operational requirements can be different in a remote environment. Planning ahead, monitoring stock and communicating early when supplies are running low are important parts of the role.
