About the Role:

Curtin has an exciting opportunity for a Foreign Risk Officer to join our talented team in International Risk and Academic Security. In this role, you will play a critical part in strengthening Curtin’s resilience to foreign interference and protecting our community, research partnerships and cutting-edge research. Working closely with the Foreign Risk Consultant, you will undertake due diligence, analysis, risk assessment and mitigation activities across a range of foreign risk-related regulatory and governance requirements.

You will also work closely with staff across diverse areas of the University, including Research, People and Culture, Teaching and Learning, and Commercialisation. Your ability to build trusted relationships and understand the nature and value of Curtin’s activities will be key to identifying and assessing foreign risks and developing effective management strategies. You will also monitor activities, submit notifiable arrangements to government and coordinate applications for relevant permits as required.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Conduct due diligence and analysis using relevant documentation, open-source information and stakeholder engagement to develop clear, concise and objective risk assessments, supported by appropriate source material.
- Develop and recommend tailored controls to effectively mitigate identified risks.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including academic and professional staff, industry representatives, government agencies and their offices.
- Provide clear, practical advice and effectively communicate risk assessments and controls to relevant stakeholders.
- Keep up to date with legislation, guidelines and geopolitical developments that may impact foreign risk management and compliance across the University.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of processes, practices and approaches as part of Curtin’s research security program.
- Administer relevant shared mailboxes, tracking systems and risk profiles.

Who we are looking for/Selection Criteria:

1. Demonstrated analytical, assessment and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex information and make sound, evidence-based risk recommendations.
2. Highly developed interpersonal and verbal communication skills,



with the ability to engage confidently with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders and achieve solution-focused outcomes in complex risk environments.
3. Highly developed written communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear, concise and well-structured correspondence, reports and documentation.
4. Highly developed organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise dynamic caseloads and make timely, considered decisions.
5. Demonstrated experience providing advice and guidance on the interpretation and application of policy, legislation and regulatory requirements.
6. Advanced computer skills, particularly experience using the Microsoft Office suite of applications.
7. Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy while contributing positively and collaboratively within a team environment.

Desirable Criteria:

- Experience conducting open-source intelligence (OSINT) collection and analysis, including the use of specialist tools.
- Knowledge of university research, innovation and engagement models, including their design, evolution and execution.
- Previous experience in national security matters, or familiarity and interest in a range of ‘Foreign Risk’ related regulatory and governance requirements, including Foreign Interference, Defence Trade Controls, Sanctions, Foreign Arrangements Scheme, Foreign Influence and Transparency Scheme and/or geopolitics.
- Previous experience working in classified security domains.

Role Requirements:

1. Successful applicants are subject to a National Police Clearance, and background, integrity, and reference checks to Curtin’s satisfaction
2. A willingness and ability to apply and maintain an Australian NV1 (or higher)



security clearance (requires Australian citizenship). Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining a security clearance.

This Continuous G06 role attracts a remuneration of $99,213 - $105,251 + 17% superannuation.
