Position Overview

The Anindilyakwa Land & Sea Rangers work in partnership with Traditional Owners to care for and manage the land and sea country of the Groote Archipelago, supporting cultural responsibilities, protecting environmental and cultural values, and passing on knowledge to future generations. The Rangers deliver projects under the Indigenous Protected Area and the Indigenous Rangers Program, working with community, industry and government to manage visitor access, compliance patrols, threatened species, biosecurity, fisheries, asset maintenance, and community education. This position coordinates, supervises and supports Ranger teams to meet funding obligations and ensure the effective protection of land, sea and cultural sites in accordance with Anindilyakwa law and the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1976 (Cth).

About Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC)

The Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC) represents the Traditional Owners of the Groote archipelago. The ALC officially commenced in 1991; replacing the role previously carried out by the Northern Land Council. The ALC functions to ascertain and express the wishes and opinions of the Anindilyakwa people as to the management of the land and sea in the Groote archipelago region, to protect interests of Traditional Owners, to assist in protection of sacred sites, to assist Anindilyakwa people in traditional land claims, to negotiate with persons desiring to obtain an estate or interest in the land, to assist Traditional Owners in carrying out commercial activity, and to supervise and provide administrative and other assistance for Land Trusts holding Indigenous land in the Groote archipelago region. ALC is an independent statutory authority of the Commonwealth, subject to the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013, described therein as a Corporate Commonwealth Entity and is currently a portfolio agency of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Selection Criteria





- Demonstrated experience supervising and coordinating staff to deliver on‑ground environmental, cultural and social management activities, in remote or field‑based settings.
- Proven ability to work respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal people, including consultation with Traditional Owners and community members including a strong understanding of Aboriginal governance structures in Northern Australia.
- Understanding of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (NT) 1976 and commitment to community empowerment, training and development.
- Ability to work independently in remote areas; solid interpersonal, written and computer skills, including Microsoft Office and reporting.
- Availability for 1 weekend patrol per month.

Desirable:

- Experience using GIS, digital mapping or data management systems.Mechanical aptitude with vehicles, vessels, or small motors.

Qualifications:

- Relevant qualification and/or demonstrated experience in natural resource, cultural resource, or land and sea management.
- Willingness to obtain a Coxswain Certificate of Competency (Australian Maritime Safety Authority [AMSA] is required for this position)
- Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal certificate
- Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal certificate
- Coxswain Grade 3 Near Coastal certificate
- Demonstrated ability to safely operate and navigate small commercial vessels (up to 12 metres), including conducting thorough pre‑departure checks, monitoring maritime conditions, and ensuring compliance with all relevant marine safety regulations.

- A National Police Check is required for this position prior to appointment.
- A Fitness for Work assessment is required for this position prior to appointment.

Working with Children

- A valid Working with Children check/clearance is required for this position
- Queensland = Working with children check [Blue Card]
- Northern Territory = Working with children clearance [Ochre Card]

Motor Vehicle Licence

- A valid motor vehicle licence is required for this position.
