Full-Time Environmental Consultant
(Ecology and Environmental Planning)

Salary: $90,000 + superannuation

Summary

This position will be located at the New Ground Gold Coast office at Bundall QLD 4217. The role also requires travel throughout Queensland for specific ecological and environmental planning projects.

The Environmental Consultant – Ecology and Environmental Planning is a multidisciplinary role that combines ecological field survey expertise with environmental planning capabilities. The position is responsible for designing and delivering technically defensible ecological surveys, applying Queensland and Commonwealth environmental planning frameworks to a range of development projects, preparing high-quality technical documentation, and managing projects from inception through to delivery. The role also encompasses bushfire hazard assessment, bushfire attack level (BAL) modelling, and the preparation of bushfire management plans.

Main Duties

- Undertake ecological field surveys including flora and fauna assessments, habitat assessments, and threatened species surveys across a range of Queensland environments.
- Apply Queensland and Commonwealth environmental planning frameworks to development projects, including assessment under the Workplace Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth) (EPBC Act), Nature Conservation Act 1992 (Qld), Vegetation Management Act 1999 (Qld), Planning Schemes and other relevant legislation.
- Undertake bushfire hazard assessments and bushfire attack level (BAL) modelling in accordance with applicable standards and planning requirements.
- Prepare bushfire management plans for a range of development project types, including residential, infrastructure, and land development projects.
- Prepare and review technically rigorous, evidence-based ecological and environmental planning reports including Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), Ecological Assessments, Flora and Fauna Surveys, Vegetation Management Plans, Offset Strategies,



Bushfire Management Plans, and similar technical documents.
- Manage projects from inception to delivery, including:
- Developing project plans and scopes of work;
- Allocating tasks and coordinating field teams;
- Monitoring project budgets, timeframes and deliverables;
- Providing early identification of risks to project outcomes; and
- Liaising with clients throughout the project lifecycle.

- Engage in team project meetings to understand the nature and scope of works, timeframes and budgets necessary to undertake ecological assessments and deliverable plans and reports.
- Participate in ecological field trips which may require travel away from home for varied periods of time.
- Facilitate appropriate flora and fauna species identification strategies to inform accurate planning and reporting.
- Create and enhance client and other stakeholder relationships through project excellence and effective communication.
- Liaise with government agencies, including State and Commonwealth environmental regulators, in relation to development applications and approvals.
- Utilise SharePoint to manage document storage and version control, ensuring that established document naming conventions are applied.
- Accurately record time and outlays expenditure for each project within specified timeframes.
- Adhere to responsibilities for office, field and travel environments as specified in relevant Workplace Health & Safety legislation.
- Comply with Quality, Environmental and Safety Standards.
- Comply with all New Ground Policies and Procedures, as amended from time to time.
- Any other tasks as required and deemed appropriate for the position.

Qualification, Skills and Experience





The following qualifications, skills and experience are required for this position:

- Minimum Bachelor’s degree qualifications in Ecology, Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum 18 months of relevant professional experience in an ecological and/or environmental planning consulting environment with a focus on projects in south-east Queensland.
- Demonstrated experience undertaking ecological field surveys in Queensland, including flora and/or fauna identification and habitat assessments.
- Demonstrated project management experience, including managing project scope, budget, timeframes, and client relationships.
- Demonstrated experience in consulting on and applying the Queensland and Commonwealth Government environmental planning framework, including one or more of the following:
- EPBC Act referral and assessment processes;
- Queensland Development Assessment Framework;
- Vegetation Management Act 1999 (Qld) and associated mapping;
- Nature Conservation Act 1992 (Qld) and associated policy; and/or
- Local Government planning schemes and overlays.

- Demonstrated experience in bushfire hazard assessment and bushfire attack level (BAL) modelling in accordance with AS 3959 and applicable Queensland planning policy.
- Demonstrated experience in the preparation of bushfire management plans for development projects.
- High-level technical report writing skills with demonstrated ability to prepare clear, scientifically rigorous reports.
- Thorough knowledge of relevant Queensland and Commonwealth threatened species and native vegetation legislation.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to commencement).
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Current Queensland driver’s licence.
