The Mornington Shire Council is a Local Government Authority providing range of services to the twenty-three islands of the Wellesley Group located 125kms north-west of Burketown, 200kms west of Karumba and 444kms from Mount Isa, in the southern section of the Gulf of Carpentaria, residing within the State of Queensland. The island is 2.5 hours flight from Cairns.

Position Overview

This is not a traditional Bottle shop role. We run the Alcohol Distribution Operations for Mornington Island and are looking for a responsible individual to assist with the day-to-day operation of the carriage. Ensuring the facility is operated professionally, safely and in strict accordance with all applicable legislation, liquor licensing requirements, Council policies and the conditions of the restricted area permit.

This is an operational role combining alcohol stock management, warehousing and forklift operations as well as the daily orders and distribution. The successful applicant will be responsible for receiving, storing, organising and distributing alcohol stock, maintaining accurate inventory records and ensuring all sales and distribution activities comply with the rules governing alcohol supply within the community.

The position requires a high level of professionalism, integrity, discretion and consistency. The successful applicant must be confident working independently and applying rules and procedures fairly and consistently to all customers.

Key Responsibilities

Alcohol Distribution (Carriage)

- Take day-to-day responsibility for the operation and presentation of the alcohol distribution and affiliated areas.

- Receive incoming alcohol deliveries and verify quantities against delivery documentation.

- Unload, move and safely store alcohol stock using a forklift.

- Maintain an organised and secure warehouse and stock storage area.

- Ensure stock is rotated and stored appropriately.

- Monitor stock levels and identify upcoming replenishment requirements.

- Prepare stock for distribution and customer collection.

- Maintain accurate stock records and investigate discrepancies.

- Conduct regular stock takes and report variances promptly.

- Ensure alcohol stock is secured at all times when the facility is unattended.

- Maintain clean, safe and professional working areas.

- Microsoft Excel ability is preferred

Carriage Operations

- Provide professional and respectful customer service.

- Process sales accurately through the point-of-sale system.

- Verify customer eligibility and ensure all required identification and permits are checked.





- Ensure transactions comply with the restricted area permit and all applicable liquor requirements.

- Refuse sales where the customer does not meet the legal or operational requirements.

- Ensure responsible service of alcohol principles are consistently applied.

- Maintain a professional approach when dealing with difficult or challenging situations.

- Ensure pricing, stock and product information is accurate.

- Strictly comply with Queensland liquor legislation, licensing conditions and Council procedures.

- Operate within the requirements of the restricted area permit and any applicable community-specific alcohol restrictions.

- Ensure alcohol is only supplied in accordance with authorised purchasing, identification and quantity requirements.

- Maintain all required records and documentation.

- Report suspected breaches, attempted breaches, inappropriate behaviour or irregular transactions to management.

- Maintain confidentiality regarding customer information and alcohol-related transactions.

- Never bypass, ignore or make informal exceptions to established rules or purchasing restrictions.

- Work cooperatively with management and relevant authorities regarding compliance matters.

- Maintain a zero-tolerance approach to fraudulent, dishonest or non-compliant transactions.

Stock & Warehouse Management

- Safely operate forklifts to unload and move stock.

- Maintain appropriate stock rotation and storage practices.

- Monitor damaged, missing, expired or incorrectly supplied stock.

- Assist with freight coordination and delivery planning.

- Ensure stock is stored securely and efficiently to maximise available warehouse space.

- Maintain accurate inventory records within the applicable stock management system.

- Assist with regular stock audits and reconciliations.

- Report stock shortages, excesses, damage or discrepancies immediately.

Administration & Reporting

- Complete daily operational and sales requirements accurately.

- Reconcile transactions and report discrepancies.

- Maintain required registers, records and compliance documentation.

- Assist management with stock reports, ordering and forecasting.





- Provide timely information to management regarding stock, sales, customer issues and operational concerns.

- Ensure all Council equipment, systems and facilities are used appropriately.

Essential Requirements

The successful applicant must have:

- Current Queensland Approved Manager certification.

- Current Forklift Licence (LF).

- Experience working in a bottle shop, liquor retail environment, bar, tavern or similar alcohol service workplace.

- Demonstrated knowledge of responsible service of alcohol principles.

- Demonstrated ability to follow legislation, liquor licensing requirements and operational procedures strictly.

- Strong stock control and inventory management skills.

- Experience operating a forklift in a warehouse or stock environment.

- Good numeracy and attention to detail.

- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

- Strong customer service and communication skills.

- Ability to maintain professionalism in challenging situations.

- Demonstrated honesty, integrity and reliability.

- Ability to work respectfully within a remote Indigenous community.

Desirable

- Experience working in a restricted or regulated liquor environment.

- Experience with POS and stock management systems.

- Previous warehouse, freight or distribution experience.

- Previous experience working in a remote community.

Working in a Restricted Alcohol Environment

This position carries significant responsibility due to the regulated nature of alcohol supply within the community. The successful applicant must understand that rules and legislation cannot be applied selectively. The operator must be comfortable enforcing purchasing restrictions and compliance requirements consistently, regardless of who the customer is.

The role requires sound judgement, professionalism and discretion when dealing with customers, community members, visitors, contractors and other stakeholders. The successful applicant must never compromise compliance requirements because of pressure, familiarity with a customer or personal relationships.

This position is particularly important in maintaining the integrity of the Council’s alcohol distribution operation. Compliance, accountability and responsible service are fundamental requirements of the role.
