Data Architect

- Duration: Initial contract through to October 2027, with the possibility of a 6-month extension
- Location: Brisbane CBD

Company Overview
BLACKROC is partnering with a large Queensland Government department to recruit a Data Architect for a major, high-profile enterprise transformation program currently moving into its build stage.

Role Purpose
This is a senior, hands-on-the-design role owning the data architecture across two connected streams: the target analytics architecture in Microsoft Fabric, and the migration architecture moving data out of Appian-based SQL source systems into Microsoft Dataverse. You'll act as the design authority, setting the standards, principles and patterns, then guiding engineers, analysts, testers and business stakeholders to deliver against them. The remit is deliberately broad, because the client wants analytics and migration treated as one coherent enterprise data approach rather than two separate technical exercises.

Key Responsibilities

- Define and govern the end-to-end data architecture across Microsoft Fabric, Dataverse, Azure, migration tooling and reporting
- Establish data architecture principles, standards, patterns, naming conventions and modelling approaches
- Design the Fabric analytics architecture, OneLake structure, lakehouse and warehouse patterns, medallion layers, curated data products and semantic model alignment
- Lead the migration architecture from Appian-based SQL sources into Dataverse, covering staging, profiling, mapping, transformation, load sequencing, cutover and rollback
- Oversee source-to-target mapping, data cleansing, lookup resolution, alternate key strategy and ownership mapping

- Act as design authority and provide clear architectural direction to Data Engineers, Data Migration Engineers, Senior Data Analysts and Solution Architects
- Review and assure data models, transformation logic, reconciliation controls and reporting data sources
- Support Agile delivery through backlog refinement, design walkthroughs, architecture reviews and release readiness

Required Skills & Experience

- Extensive experience delivering enterprise data architecture across large or complex transformation programs
- Robust understanding of Microsoft Fabric, OneLake, lakehouses, warehouses, medallion architecture, pipelines, notebooks, SQL analytics endpoints, semantic models and Power BI consumption
- Strong experience leading data migration architecture into Microsoft Dataverse, Dynamics 365, Power Platform or comparable enterprise SaaS platforms
- Demonstrated experience designing migration approaches from SQL-based sources into Dataverse, including staging, transformation, mapping, validation, reconciliation, sequencing, cutover, rollback and post-load verification
- Strong understanding of Dataverse data architecture, table design, relationships, alternate keys, ownership, business units, teams, security roles, status/state handling and platform constraints
- Experience defining source-to-target mappings, transformation rules, data quality rules, reconciliation controls and migration acceptance criteria

- Strong understanding of data governance, privacy, security, role-based access, lineage, metadata, retention and auditability in enterprise environments
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain complex architecture decisions and trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience in Agile delivery environments with formal architecture governance and delivery assurance

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

- Fabric Link for Dataverse, Azure Synapse Link, Direct Lake, Dataflow Gen2, Fabric notebooks and Fabric deployment patterns
- Exposure to Appian data models, Appian-backed SQL databases, case management data structures, process history or workflow migration
- KingswaySoft / SSIS, Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL, Dataverse Web API or Dataverse SDK
- Power BI semantic models, DAX awareness, row-level and object-level security, sensitivity labels and governed reporting patterns
- Experience in large-scale legacy replacement, regulatory, licensing, permitting, compliance or case management environments
- Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Engineer, Power BI, Dynamics 365, Power Platform or enterprise architecture certifications
