HorizonOne Recruitment
Canberra
This large federal government department administers a complex, multi-billion dollar program of payments and support services on behalf of the Australian community.
It is currently delivering a significant legislative reform program to simplify its underpinning legislative framework, alongside a broader modernisation agenda to lift service delivery and financial management maturity across the organisation.
It’s centrally located with hybrid working arrangements.
The Opportunity
This Finance Business Partner opportunity has arisen within a finance division. You'll act as the primary conduit between the Chief Financial Officer and business areas, translating financial data into advice that shapes real decisions across both departmental and administered functions.
It's a role that sits close to influence, supporting business planning, project and investment decisions, and building financial capability more broadly across the organisation.
The Role
As Finance Business Partner, you will be responsible for:
- Acting as the primary conduit between the CFO and business areas, building and managing effective working relationships
- Delivering financial advice, analysis and support to key stakeholders across departmental and administered functions
- Preparing monthly financial reports for senior executives, including variance analysis and full-year forecast commentary
- Managing month-end processes, including accruals, prepayments and end-of-financial-year requirements
- Monitoring and reviewing monthly forecasts in partnership with stakeholders, advising on emerging financial impacts
- Coordinating budget development, expenditure forecasting and longer-term financial planning
- Applying project accounting skills to IT and technology-related project work, ideally drawing on public sector experience
The Ideal Person
You might already work in APS finance business partnering, project accounting, management accounting, or you might be a Big 4 or consulting professional who has delivered engagements within the public sector and is ready to bring that experience in-house.
Either way, you're just as comfortable preparing a month-end accrual as you are advising a senior executive on a forecast variance, and you know how to translate financial detail into a clear recommendation.
You’ll bring:
- Formal qualifications in accounting, finance or business, or equivalent experience in public sector financial management
- Demonstrated experience in financial and management reporting, including budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis aligned with the Commonwealth financial framework
- Technically sound accounting skills applied within a public sector context
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate financial information for non-financial audiences
- Robust stakeholder management skills, including the confidence to influence senior stakeholders on financial risks and opportunities
It would also be desirable if you have:
- CA or CPA qualified, or currently studying towards it
- Public sector finance business partnering experience
- Project accounting or financial project management experience on IT projects within the public sector
Salary / Rate
- $70/hr – $75/hr + Super
- 12-month labour hire contract, with a possible extension
- Hybrid working arrangements available, with the role based in either Canberra or Brisbane
