About the South East Public Health Unit (SEPHU)

The South East Public Health Unit (SEPHU) is a major component of a once in a generation reform of public health delivery in Victoria. The new system consists of three Melbourne metropolitan Public Health Units North Eastern (NEPHU), Western (WPHU) and South East (SEPHU), who are linked with the six Regional Public Health Units and the Department of Health (DH).

SEPHU is led and coordinated by Monash Health and was established initially to strengthen the public health response to COVID-19 through end-to-end contact tracing and outbreak management, community engagement, screening and vaccination. SEPHU has since evolved to enable the integration of care and public health functions, whilst enhancing the ability to rapidly respond to communicable disease notifications and outbreaks and infection prevention issues. SEPHU covers a catchment area with approximately 1.8 million people across eleven local government areas.

The Public Health Registrar provides support to the South East Public Health Unit (SEPHU) operational teams, escalating relevant issues to the responsible public health physician.
