Precision Signs Australia
Wagga Wagga
Own the platform behind thousands of live displays
Precision builds and operates digital display systems used in hospitality venues across
Australia.
Behind every display is a distributed software platform responsible for getting the right content
to the right screen, keeping devices in sync, reacting to live events, and continuing to operate
when a venue's internet connection inevitably becomes unreliable.
We're looking for a Senior or Lead Software Engineer to take technical ownership of that
platform.
You'll work across the APIs, services, data model, messaging infrastructure and content delivery
systems that connect our cloud platform to a growing fleet of physical devices.
This is a startup, but not a greenfield idea. The product exists, customers use it every day, and
the platform is growing. We're now looking for an experienced engineer to help us shape the
architecture and engineering practices required for the next stage.
About Precision
Precision Signs is a 50-year-old Australian manufacturer based in Wagga Wagga, with more
than 30 staff designing, building and supporting digital display and gaming products for venues
nationwide.
We're large enough to have established products, customers and revenue, but small enough
that good engineers have a genuine influence over how things are built.
Our software team works closely with the hardware, production and creative teams building the
physical products our software runs on. You won't be several organisational layers removed
from the thing you're building.
What you'll work on
Own and evolve the backend architecture
Our platform is primarily built with C#/.NET, ASP.NET Core, PostgreSQL and AWS
You'll take a leading role in how our services, APIs and data model evolve, making pragmatic
architectural decisions as the platform scales.
Build distributed content-delivery systems
Design the systems responsible for distributing media, layouts, configuration and commands
across a large fleet of remotely deployed displays.
That means solving problems around:
- Unreliable and intermittent networks
- Retries, acknowledgements and idempotency
- Device state and synchronisation
- Caching and offline operation
- Rollout and version management
- Observability across remote devices
Build real-time and event-driven systems
We integrate with live data sources where an event may need to propagate through our
platform and appear across hundreds of displays within seconds.
You'll work with message queues, asynchronous processing and event-driven architecture to
make those systems fast, reliable and understandable.
Raise the engineering standard
Help establish consistent approaches to:
- System and service architecture
- Automated testing
- Code review
- Observability and monitoring
- CI/CD
- Deployment
- Documentation
- Incident handling
We're not looking for process for process's sake. The goal is to make it easier for engineers to
build, deploy and operate reliable software.
Help grow the engineering team
You'll work closely with the existing development team through design discussions, code
reviews, pairing and technical mentoring.
For candidates joining at Lead level, you'll also play a major role in technical planning, hiring
and growing the software team over the next few years.
Work close to the decisions
You'll work directly with the people responsible for product and technical direction.
If you think something should be built differently, you'll be able to make the case and influence
the decision.
What we're looking for
You don't need to match every bullet, but you'll probably have most of the following:
- 7+ years of skilled software engineering experience, primarily building backend or
- platform systems
- Strong experience with C# and .NET
- Production experience with ASP.NET Core and REST APIs
- Strong relational database fundamentals; we use PostgreSQL
- Experience designing and operating distributed or event-driven systems
- Practical knowledge of message queues, asynchronous processing, retries, idempotency
- and eventual consistency
- Experience with AWS or another major cloud platform
- Experience operating production systems, including logging, monitoring, alerting and
- diagnosing failures
- A track record of making meaningful architectural decisions and understanding their tradeoffs
- The ability to balance good engineering with actually shipping products
- Strong communication skills across both technical and non-technical teams
For a Lead appointment,
we'd additionally expect experience providing technical direction
across a team and mentoring senior and mid-level engineers.
Useful, but not required
Our products cross software, hardware and graphics, so you may also encounter:
- Unity
- React and TypeScript
- RabbitMQ or similar messaging systems
- Graphics programming and shaders
- Image and video processing
- Electron
- Embedded systems
- AV systems
- Device or fleet management
- Digital signage
- Gaming systems
We'd much rather hire someone with exceptional backend and distributed-systems
fundamentals than someone who happens to recognise every technology on that list.
Why this role is interesting
Real architectural ownership
You'll have meaningful authority over the direction of the platform rather than simply
implementing architecture decided somewhere else.
Software meets the physical world
The systems you build ultimately control real hardware installed in real venues across Australia.
Interesting distributed-systems problems
Remote devices, unreliable networks, real-time events, fleet management, content distribution
and offline operation create engineering problems that are very different from another CRUD
SaaS application.
A small engineering team with room to shape it
We're investing further in software and want the person in this role to help define how the
engineering function develops.
An established Australian company
Precision has been operating for more than 50 years, with established customers, products and
manufacturing capability behind the software.
A different lifestyle
If you're considering relocating from Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra, Wagga Wagga offers
considerably shorter commutes and lower housing costs while still supporting a strong
professional career.
How to apply
Please send one or more of the following:
- Your CV
- Your GitHub or portfolio
- A short description of an interesting system you've built, the decisions you made, and what you'd do differently today
The interview process
Our process is straight forward:
1. Initial conversation
A short call to talk about the role, what you're looking for and whether there's a mutual fit.
2. Technical conversation
A discussion with our engineering team about systems you've built, architecture and how
you approach engineering problems.
3. Final conversation
Meet the people you'll work with and talk through the role, company and offer
