Position:Full Time
Join Australia's Next Generation of Industrial Energy Engineers
Power Edge Engineering is a specialist electrical engineering consultancy delivering innovative power generation, renewable energy and industrial electrical solutions throughout Australia.
Our engineers work on projects that few consultancies can offer, from industrial microgrids and utility-scale renewable energy systems through to large industrial processing facilities, HV embedded networks and critical infrastructure.
If you enjoy solving technically challenging problems and want to work on projects at the forefront of Australia's energy transition, we'd love to hear from you.
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for an electrical design engineer with experience in power generation and renewable energy systems to join our team.
You will work across industrial, commercial and utility-scale projects, developing electrical designs, performing power system studies, commissioning equipment and working directly with Australian and international clients to deliver practical engineering outcomes.
The unique aspect of this role combines traditional consulting engineering with hands‐on programming and commissioning of advanced microgrid technologies and distributed energy systems.
We will give you broad exposure to technical challenges that can be difficult to find in a larger organisation.
At Power Edge Engineering, you will not be confined to one narrow stream of electrical engineering.
Instead, you'll work on really cool energy projects, using hybrid optimisation software, performing load flow, short circuit and arc‐flash studies, writing reactive control philosophies, bench testing protection relays, and programming microgrid controllers.
One of the most exciting parts of this role is designing advanced industrial microgrid systems that integrate:
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
Grid-connected and off‐grid power systems
Advanced Energy Management Systems (EMS)
You'll help develop intelligent control systems that coordinate multiple energy sources to optimise reliability, efficiency and operating costs.
Your work will include:
Developing control algorithms for Energy Management Systems
Programming and testing seamless transitions between grid-connected and islanded operation
Synchronising generators and inverter-based resources with the electricity network
Optimising renewable energy utilisation while maintaining power quality and system stability
Integrating distributed energy resources into complex industrial facilities
Supporting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and commissioning
This is genuine engineering work where your ability to program protection relays, develop protection philosophies and control strategies directly influence how multi‐megawatt power systems operate in the field.
Industrial microgrids combine renewable generation, energy storage and thermal generation to deliver resilient, efficient and intelligent power systems capable of operating seamlessly on-grid or independently when required.
Typical responsibilities include:
Electrical design and documentation (SLD, Schematics,
Cable calculations and schedules
Power system studies (Load flow, short circuit, arc‐flash, protection coordination)
Power quality investigations
Renewable energy system design and thermal generator integration
Switchboard design
About You
You will ideally possess:
Bachelor of Electrical Engineering
5 years of engineering design experience, preferably in a consulting role.
Experience designing industrial and/or commercial solar installations
Strong understanding of Australian Standards
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Full Australian working rights, including Australian or New Zealand citizenship, permanent residency, or an appropriate Australian visa providing unrestricted working rights
A current Construction White Card, or the ability and willingness to obtain one prior to undertaking site work
The ability and willingness to travel to project sites as required
The ability to undertake site-based testing and commissioning activities
Highly Regarded
Experience with industrial power generation systems
Strong understanding of:
Generator Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs)
Excitation systems
Permanent Magnet Generators (PMG)
Generator protection
Microgrid control systems
Experience with power system modelling software (PowerCAD, ETAP)
Protection and coordination experience
CPEng or working towards Chartership
Renewable energy project experience
