EL1 Assistant Director – Green Economy Policy | NV1
Booka is seeking an experiencedEL1-equivalent Assistant Director – Policyto support a major Australian Government department delivering policy initiatives across Australia's growing green economy agenda.
This is a substantive policy role focused on theSingapore–Australia Green Economy Agreement, requiring a strategic policy professional with solid whole-of-government coordination, stakeholder engagement and high-level written advisory capability.
The opportunity
The Assistant Director will lead the development and implementation of new and priority green economy policy initiatives.
The role involves working across government and with international partners on areas including energy transition, research and innovation, standards, skills, trade and broader green economy cooperation.
You will help translate policy objectives into practical initiatives and support implementation of associated programs and grants.
Priority green economy sectors include:
Renewable and clean energy
Sustainable agribusiness and food
Built environment and infrastructure
Advanced manufacturing and sustainable materials
Waste management and the circular economy
Green transportation and logistics
Energy-efficient technology and products
Environmental monitoring, analysis and assessment
Emerging green-sector products and services aligned with Green Economy Agreement priorities

Candidates with policy experience across one or more of these sectors are particularly encouraged to apply.
Key responsibilities
You will:
Lead development and implementation of green economy policy initiatives.
Manage relationships with Australian and international government counterparts and external stakeholders.
Coordinate whole-of-government engagement across relevant portfolios.
Support delivery of green economy programs and grants.
Prepare strategic advice, briefs, Cabinet materials and ministerial correspondence.
Identify emerging risks, opportunities and trends across green economy policy.
Support international and regional cooperation activities.
Provide leadership within the team and undertake higher-level responsibilities when required.
About you
Demonstrated experience developing and implementing policy within the Australian Government.
Strong strategic thinking and analytical capability.
Experience managing complex stakeholder relationships.
High-quality written communication skills.
Experience preparing senior briefs, Cabinet materials or ministerial correspondence.
Robust judgement, initiative and professionalism.
The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver under pressure.
Strong whole-of-government coordination experience.
Experience inAustralian trade policy and/or green economy sectorsis particularly desirable.
Relevant backgrounds may include climate, energy, trade, investment, infrastructure, industry, agriculture, manufacturing, sustainability, environmental policy, innovation or related areas.
Contract details
Classification: EL1 equivalent
Location: Barton, Canberra ACT
Rate:$***** to $***** per hour + super, depending on experience
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Contract: 24 months
Extension: Potential further 12 months
Travel: Interstate or international travel may be required.
Security clearance – mandatory
You must currently hold an Australian Government NV1 security clearance or higher to be considered.
Candidates who do not currently hold NV1 or a higher-level Australian Government security clearance cannot be considered at this time.
