The Role
This role is responsible for curating and managing a high-quality database of PSMA PET/CT images from the PRIMARY trial, ensuring accurate image classification, data integrity, and compliance with Good Clinical Practice and data governance standards.
The position develops and refines automated tools to assign PRIMARY scores to PET/CT images using advanced image classification techniques, working closely with clinicians to incorporate feedback and enhance clinical utility through human-in-the-loop approaches.
In collaboration with the Cancer Imaging and Medical Physics teams, the role contributes to research publications, delivers project outcomes for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, and supports the translation of software solutions into clinical, open-source, or commercial applications.
We have an opportunity to employ a research associate to
Develop Automated Model for Classification of Prostate Cancer Grade on PSMA PET/CT Imaging using Data from PRIMARY Trials – Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia funded Research Project
Assist with image analysis and reporting for Prostate Theranostics Imaging Centre of Excellence (ProsTIC) clinical trials and registry patients
Support service expansions in PET and Nuclear Medicine clinical team
Applicants are required to have
Proven research track record in applied machine learning for medical image analysis
Familiarity with biology of cancer and anatomical interpretation of medical images
Ability to independently manage clinical research aims
Computing skills including competency with handling/transfer of DICOM image data and programming in a high-level computing language.
PhD in computer science, medical physics, biomedical engineering or related field of applied science.

1. Curate database of staging PET/CT images from PRIMARY trial
- Coordinate with medical staff and external collaborators to obtain and perform quality control for PSMA PET/CT images from the PRIMARY trial.
- Manage association between images and tumour classification
- Adhere to Good Clinical Practice and PMCC Data Governance Standards
2. Develop Automated Tools for Assigning PRIMARY Score to PET/CT images
- Explore contemporary image classification techniques to reliably determine disease grade based on abnormal tracer uptake and anatomical extent on PSMA imaging of suspected localised prostate cancer
- Work with clinicians to incorporate feedback to improve medical utility
- Incorporate techniques which permit adjustment based on observer feedback (human-in-the-loop)
3. Address Research Deliverables for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) Project
- Compile results of achievable accuracy and technical research for publication
- Prepare automated software for production institutional use and consider open-source distribution or potential commercialisation pathways
4. Work effectively in Cancer Imaging and Medical Physics teams
- Self-motivation and initiative in addressing problems and effective communication/hand-over
- Documents work in a professional manner
5. Communicate effectively with researchers and medical staff
- Good rapport with all staff
