ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Head of Learning Area – English provides strategic and instructional leadership to the English Learning Area, ensuring excellence in teaching, learning and curriculum delivery across Year 7-12. The role is responsible for fostering a collaborative, innovative and high-performing team committed to improving student achievement and engagement.
Working in partnership with the Leadership Team, the Head of Learning Area promotes a culture of continuous improvement, supports staff professional growth, ensures curriculum compliance, and contributes to the Catholic identity and mission of the College.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES
1. Catholic Identity
Support and promote the Catholic ethos and mission of the College.
Model Gospel values in leadership and relationships.
Encourage opportunities for students to explore literature through ethical, moral and faith perspectives where appropriate.
Support whole-school liturgical, pastoral and community initiatives.
2. Leadership of Learning
Lead the development of an engaging, contemporary and evidence-informed English curriculum.
Promote excellence in teaching practice through instructional leadership, coaching and mentoring.
Build a collaborative professional learning culture focused on improving student outcomes.
Lead curriculum review and innovation aligned with the College Strategic Plan.
Ensure teaching programs reflect current education research and best practice.
Foster high expectations for student achievement and academic growth.
Oversee the plannings, implementation, and evaluation of the English curriculum from Years 7-12.
Ensure compliance with School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) requirements
WACE requirements
CEWA policies and directives.
Coordinate assessment schedules, moderation and reporting processes.
Monitor curriculum continuity across year levels.
Ensure appropriate differentiation for diverse learners.

Develop intervention and extension programs.
Monitor student progress and work collaboratively with teachers to improve outcomes.
Celebrate student achievement and promote excellence in literacy.
Lead and support members of the English Learning Area.
Conduct regular Learning Area meetings.
Mentor beginning and experienced teachers.
Support teacher goal setting and professional growth.
Facilitate collaborative planning and moderation.
Encourage innovation, reflective practice and professional dialogue.
Assist with induction of new staff.
6. Professional Learning
Identify professional learning needs within the Learning Area.
Coordinate internal skilled learning.
Encourage participation in external professional learning opportunities.
Share current educational research and effective classroom practice.
Promote ongoing professional reflection.
7. Quality Assurance
Monitor curriculum documentation and assessment practices.
Ensure consistency in assessment, moderation and reporting.
Review teaching programs annually.
Maintain high standards of documentation and curriculum planning.
Ensure Learning Area resources remain current and relevant.
8. Resource Management
Prepare and mange the English Learning Area budget.
Recommend resource purchases.
Oversee ordering and maintenance of teaching resources.
Ensure effective use of digital technologies and learning resources.
Work collaboratively with: Director of Students
Library Staff
Directors of teaching and Learning
Parents and caregivers.
Build productive partnerships that enhance student learning and wellbeing.
10. Administration
Prepare reports as required.
Coordinate subject selection information.
Assist with staffing recommendations.
Develop Learning Area operational plans.
Maintain accurate curriculum and assessment documentation.
Attend leadership meetings and relevant College events.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of a Diploma of Education
Current registration with Teachers Registration Board Western Australia
Current Working With Children Check
Willingness to obtain Accreditation for Middle Leaders in Catholic Schools
