Director – Safety and Emergency Management - Relocate to Darwin

This is a rare opportunity to design and lead a newly created function from the ground up. As Director, Safety & Emergency Management, you will establish enterprise-wide Work Health and Safety (WHS) and Corporate Emergency Management capability for the Northern Territory Department of Corrections.
Reporting to a senior executive, you will lead a small, specialist team responsible for driving safety, emergency preparedness and organisational resilience across the Department. Working closely with senior leaders, you will influence strategic decision-making on safety, risk and emergency preparedness.
You will help shape a positive safety culture, build organisational resilience and ensure the Department is prepared to prevent, respond to and recover from emergencies, while keeping the health and safety of a diverse workforce at the centre of everything you do.
Key responsibilities
Lead the organisation's work health and safety and emergency management strategy, ensuring staff, workplaces and operations are prepared for a range of risks and emergencies.
Provide trusted advice to senior executives on complex safety and emergency management issues, helping shape decisions that strengthen organisational resilience.
Drive the continuous improvement of the Department's WHS Management System and Emergency Management Framework, fostering a proactive safety culture and informed decision-making.
Lead and develop a high-performing team to deliver work health and safety and emergency management initiatives across the Department.
Build strong partnerships with emergency services,
government agencies and other stakeholders to coordinate preparedness, response and recovery activities.
About you
Extensive experience in the development, implementation and continuous improvement of WHS Management Systems.
Extensive experience in emergency management, including prevention, preparedness, response and recovery, and the development of emergency management frameworks and plans.
Proven ability to provide strategic advice on complex safety and risk issues to senior leaders and executives.
Exceptional stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships and influence outcomes across diverse groups.
Demonstrated experience leading and developing high-performing teams in dynamic and rapid-paced environments.

Salary of $152,751 – $166,487 + 12% super
6 weeks recreational leave per annum
3 weeks personal leave per annum
17.5% annual leave loading
3-day Christmas shutdown
