Position: Chief Executive Officer
Position Type: Full time. Some evening and weekend work is required.
Salary Package: $110,000 – $120,000 p.a. inclusive of superannuation (commensurate with experience)
Reports To: Writing NSW Chairperson and Board
Writing NSW, the state’s main support organisation for the literature sector, is seeking a visionary CEO to lead the organisation through its next exciting chapter.
The CEO of Writing NSW is responsible for the operations of the organisation, fostering cultural influence, and championing writers. They will develop and implement strategies to enhance the organisation’s impact and reach, and embrace advancements that position Writing NSW at the forefront of the literary and cultural landscape. The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking, motivated, and dynamic individual with excellent financial management skills. They will have a working knowledge of state and federal government policies, as well as philanthropic and corporate support for the arts, and will have demonstrated success in attracting support from government agencies, philanthropic foundations and individual donors. They will possess exceptional strategic leadership skills, strong relationship-building skills, and a commitment to supporting under-represented voices, ensuring Writing NSW remains an influential and inspiring hub for the writing community and broader literary scene.

Selection Criteria: CEO
·Leadership and strategic thinking:
oA solid understanding of writers’ needs and experience and ability to create and implement innovative and forward-thinking strategies and programs to support writers and writing in NSW
oAbility to provide visionary leadership and strategic direction, while also being flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances
oAbility to build an organisation’s profile and effectively communicate its mission, values and achievements through various platforms including media, public speaking, and digital channels
oExperience designing and implementing strategies to grow and maintain membership and constituency, ensuring ongoing support and engagement from the writing community.
oAbility to identify and leverage digital tools to enhance the organisation’s reach, efficiency and impact, and contribute to discussions around future issues such as AI
·Cultural leadership and influence:
oA passion for writers and writing
oExperience fostering cultural influence in the arts sector, and a strong commitment to promoting innovation, diversity and underrepresented voices in the writing community
oAbility to provide advocacy and leadership for the writing sector,
working with other writing organisations and contributing to the national agenda for writing and literature
·Financial management and revenue generation:
oAbility to generate revenue from diverse sources including programs, government and other grants, fundraising, sponsorships and philanthropy
oEffective financial management including setting and managing budgets and understanding financial reporting and compliance.
·Stakeholder engagement and relationship building: Exceptional relationship building and communication skills, with established networks within the writing sector and the ability to engage, collaborate and maintain excellent relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders including members, industry organisations, partners, funding bodies and government agencies
·People management and human resources: Experience managing, motivating, and developing teams and fostering a positive, inclusive and collaborative workplace culture
·Governance and compliance: Experience with governance structures and requirements, such as reporting to or sitting on a board, policy formulation, and awareness of regulatory requirements
·Operations and administration: Ability to oversee the day-to-day operations of an organisation, while also offering hands-on support, including developing and implementing policies, procedures, and systems to support effective program delivery, resource management, and workplace safety
Located in beautiful Callan Park, Lilyfield, Writing NSW is a not-for-profit organisation that provides support to writers at all stages of their careers. We run a lively program of courses, workshops and events as well as providing a range of services to our members and the broader writing community. We receive funding from Create NSW, the Australia Council and Inner West Council.
