The Garvan’s exceptional team is committed to the task of stopping disease before it starts. The Opportunity The COO works closely with and reports to the Executive Director, to the Chair of the Board of the Institute on Board matters, and to the Chair of the Finance Risk and Audit Committee on internal audit, finance and risk.
They partner with the Executive Director and Garvan Leadership Team to provide expertise and strategic leadership of the Institute’s finances, business operations and governance. They will work closely with the Executive Director in setting general direction and strategy for the Institute and drive the alignment of operational activity to enable Garvan’s core purpose – to improve the lives of patients, their families and communities through impactful medical research. Ultimately, they share responsibility for the overall success of Garvan. Direct reports to the COO include:
- Chief Financial Officer
- General Counsel & Company Secretary
- Head of IT Services
- Head of Risk & Assurance Services
- Building Operations Manager
- Facilities Business Manager
- Director of Animal Facilities
- Manager, Office of the COO / Executive Assistant
Garvan supports flexible working. This role is based in Sydney, however this role is suitable for:
- Hours of work flexibility (such as flexible start and finish times); and
- Location / remote working flexibility (ideally minimum 2 days on-site).
The Individual Ideal candidates will demonstrate a successful track record in leading corporate functions, with the capacity to oversee a range of complex and projects through partnerships with people across business areas, functions and departments. Proven influencing,
negotiation and exceptional people management skills will be critical to the success of this role as will deep financial management and business analytical skills, with the ability to deliver timely and high-quality outcomes. Prior experience in the research, academic, health or community sector would be viewed favourably and the alignment of the values and purpose of the Garvan is essential. We will be seeking to understand how candidates can navigate both the strategic and operational aspects of the role, their prior experience in governance and Board reporting, their success in leading transformation and their success in building high-performing teams and strong organisational culture.
