Legal Counsel
Permanent full-time or part time position
Cabrini Corporate Offices, Hawthorn East / Malvern / WFH hybrid model

The Role
We are seeking a new Legal Counsel to join our Legal and Company Secretariat team. Our team seeks to enable Cabrini’s mission and business activities through our strategy for the provision of legal advice, legal risk and compliance management, and advice generally to Cabrini Health management, Executive and Board.
The role is predominantly based at Cabrini corporate offices in Hawthorn East and Malvern. This role also has a hybrid working model with remote on offer.
Reporting to the General Counsel & Company Secretary and Senior Legal Counsel.
Key responsibilities include:
Provides counsel and advice across a range of legal domains with a particular emphasis on health law, medico-legal issues, clinical governance, coronial investigations and inquests, serious patient complaints and release of information/privacy.
Provides day-to-day management of medico-legal claims, assistance to Clinical Risk with adverse safety events, investigations and inquests, advice on complaints to the HCC and other regulatory bodies.
Manages the engagement of external legal advisers and reviews the services provided by these advisers.
About you
Full-time or part-time depending on level of experience, we are seeking a Legal Counsel to join our Legal team.
You will be a qualified legal practitioner and have:
Current valid admission to practice as a solicitor in the State of Victoria.
Top quality private practice and/or in-house counsel experience.
Medico-legal experience and knowledge of elder and health-related law.
Effective stakeholder management skills - internal with Clinical Risk and others, along with external - management of medico-legal claims, including liaising with Cabrini’s insurance brokers, insurers and external lawyers and providing instructions for litigated matters.
Experience in the not-for-profit sector and knowledge of not-for-profit law in Australia an advantage.
Ability to develop strong working relationships with business stakeholders.
Ability to provide credible, trusted, pragmatic and value-adding legal services, with concern for quality and standards.
Problem solving skills – able to identify problems, identify solutions and make recommendations to solve problems.
