The Centenary Institute is a centre of excellence in medical research affiliated with Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney.
Centenary undertakes research contributing to the worldwide effort to understand the causal relationship between genetics, the environment and the development of non-communicable disease. In particular, research in the Biology of Ageing Laboratory, led by Dr Andy Philp, is focused on identifying the molecular processes that are altered in skeletal muscle during common stresses such as exercise and ageing, to develop exercise, dietary, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical therapies to improve functional capacity and quality of life across health span.
The Role
We currently have an prospect for a Skeletal Muscle Biologist to join the Biology of Ageing Laboratory under the direct supervision of Dr Andy Philp. The Research Officer will lead a program of work focussing on how different signal transduction processes (phosphorylation, ubiquitylation) drive skeletal muscle adaptation to exercise (endurance and resistance) and how ageing affects this process. To achieve this, the research officer will perform independent research using cell, rodent and human models of exercise. In addition, the Research Officer will participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and provide support and supervision for collaborative projects involving other scientists within and external to the institute.
The key responsibilities are:
- Perform cell culture studies using human and mouse primary myoblasts.
- Perform exercise intervention studies in mice.
- Develop proteomic platforms for skeletal muscle analysis.
- Collate experimental data, write up experimental procedures and contribute to the interpretation of experimental results for academic and industrial partners.
- Participate in weekly meetings of the Biology of Ageing Research Group and presenting (on a rostered basis) to members of the Centenary Institute, the RPA precinct and external stakeholders.
About You:
- PhD in an area of science relating to skeletal muscle biology.
- >3 years of relevant research experience.
- A passion and enthusiasm for skeletal muscle biology research.
- A proven track record working with skeletal muscle cell culture and/or rodent exercise models is a direct requirement for this position.
- A proven track record of skeletal muscle dissection and biochemical analysis is a direct requirement for this position.
- Experience in performing proteomic-focussed skeletal muscle research and analysing skeletal muscle proteomics datasets is encouraged.
- Experience in drafting and finalising scientific documents for scientific and lay audiences.
