About Us
Victim Services, Support and Reform (VSSR) is part of the Service Delivery Reform, Coordination and Workplace Safety group in the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS). VSSR is responsible for the delivery and reform of services for victims of crime in Victoria, placing them at the centre of the justice system. The Family Violence Restorative Justice (FVRJ) Service within VSSR delivers restorative process options to victim survivors of family violence, and is the only victim-centred restorative justice program operating within the Victorian Government.
The Helpline offers information, advice and support and is the first step for victims of crime to access free services in Victoria. The Helpline is pivotal in linking victims to services, ensuring they receive personalised, timely and appropriate support to manage the effects of violent crime. The Helpline is also the state-wide service providing support and referrals for male victims of family violence,
primarily through responding to L17 reports received from Victoria Police. The Helpline operates 7 days per week 8am -11pm and is located in the Melbourne CBD.
About the Role
Reporting to the Supervisor, Victims of Crime Helpline, the role of the Victim Support Officer (VSO) is to provide informed and up-to-date advice, support and information about victim services and entitlements, and referrals to other services. A VSO is required to work flexibly over shifts between 7am to 11pm across 7 days per week including weekends and public holidays.
About You
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:
- An understanding of the victim support service system and associated legislation
- Experience in direct human service delivery where there are sensitive and complex needs, working from a trauma-informed perspective
- An ability to seek to understand issues, needs and motivations of others, as well as establishing trust and mutual respect with clients and team members by providing information and decisions in a sensitive and considerate manner
- An ability to build and sustain effective relationships with customers in order to build a common understanding and address their needs
- An ability to demonstrate perseverance in achieving objectives and cope effectively with setbacks and problems
- A relevant tertiary qualification and/or extensive equivalent experience is desirable.
