About the role
Our Cancer Research Division is currently seeking 2 full time Animal Technicians to join our multi-disciplinary and dynamic Animal Facility Core. There are 2 positions on offer, both positions will require the successful candidates to participate in weekend and public holiday rosters.
The principle responsibilities of these positions are animal husbandry, colony management and record keeping. The positions work closely with other animal technicians as well as research staff and students. You will support the team leaders and manager on issues of compliance, animal welfare and assist with the daily activities and maintenance of the facility.
About you
You will have a basic understanding of compliance regulations including POCTA Act, AQIS, PC2 & OGTR and Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.

It is desirable for the successful candidate to have completed a Diploma of Applied Science – Animal Technology or equivalent, and experience in colony management, including genetically modified animals.

Position Summary
To provide high quality animal welfare and husbandry to mouse breeding or experimental colonies. To support the Managers and Team Leaders on issues of compliance, staff planning, animal welfare, and to assist with the daily operations of the Animal Breed and Animal Quarantine Facility.
- Responsible for the daily husbandry, health monitoring and records of mouse colonies in an efficient manner under supervision.
- To provide and ensure high quality animal husbandry and to maintain high animal ethical standards.
- Assist with injection and collection techniques under supervision in accordance with SOP’s, AEEC approval and guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant safety, biohazard and animal welfare rules and regulations.
- To maintain a high level of hygiene and tidiness within facility.
- Effective communication and liaison with laboratory staff and team members.
