About the business and the role

HostAway is a Perth based IT company offering a range of premium hosting services including co-location, web, email, DNS and virtual server hosting. We provide opportunities to work across different areas and develop a variety of skills in a relaxed working environment.

We are seeking an experienced candidate to join our small team. You'll work with two other experienced sys admins and a level 1 support technician to support customers and improve our infrastructure and services. We offer a high level of service, so you'll need to care about providing an amazing customer experience.

This is a new position so we are open to discussions about full time vs part time depending on your availability.

Job tasks and responsibilities

The position encompasses client support, maintenance and development/project work. Applicants must be willing to do a mixture of all three. Responsibilities will include:

- Development of new infrastructure and creation of current features for existing services (eg. build a new virtual server host, automate VS provisioning, add tools to our control panel).
- Identification, troubleshooting and documentation of technical problems.
- End-user technical support. Supporting our customers is how we make money, so you need to be comfortable with answering the phone.
- Scheduled maintenance.
- Network management and support.
- TL;DR: fix stuff that breaks and find ways to prevent stuff from breaking.

Skills and experience

A successful applicant will have some* of the following skills:

- Advanced LAMP stack administration experience.

Preferably Debian / Ubuntu experience.
- Proven troubleshooting ability for mail servers (Qmail/Postfix/Dovecot).
- Experience with Microsoft Windows 2016/2019/2022 Server, IIS and MS-SQL.
- Understanding of the concepts of a Cluster - LVS experience (Corosync/Keepalive, Heartbeat) is desirable.
- Programming skills should include HTML and PHP. Perl would also be useful, but so would more modern languages and frameworks. We have back-end skills so if you are a front-end developer this could complement our team nicely.
- Virtualisation experience with Linux KVM, VMware or Xen.
- Experience with config management platforms (Ansible, Puppet, Chef, etc).
- An understanding of networks. Cisco, Juniper or Arista experience is desirable, as is knowledge of BGP.
- You've installed a rack mounted server or know a few things about hardware.

*The more skills the better but we don't expect you to know it all. Therefore a passion to learn is vital.

Attributes we are looking for:

- Excellent communicator. You don't lose your cool when someone asks for help with their iPhone Galaxy 4 (true story).
- Motivated to improve things. We don’t want to rest on our laurels.
- Team player. Don't hog all the fun programming jobs.

HostAway is located in Malaga so there are no hassles with parking. An ideal location for someone living in the northern suburbs.
This job would require the successful applicant to be in the office between the hours of 8:30am and 5:00pm, Monday to Friday. Occasional work outside of these hours will be required from time to time.
