THE ROLE
Australian Astronomical Optics - Macquarie (AAO-MQ) is currently seeking a suitably qualified Mechanical Engineer. The successful applicant will be expected to develop concepts, system and subsystem level mechanical designs and parts drawings for instrument projects. Perform structural, kinematic, vibration, and thermal analyses through FEA and other analytical techniques. Develop alignment, assembly, and test plans for the verification and acceptance of mechanical and opto-mechanical components, sub-systems, and instruments also develop technical specifications for procurements and evaluate the market for parts, products, assemble, test mechanical parts and components of instruments. Produce documentation for project proposals, reviews, subsystem analysis and tests, and for instrument operation and maintenance manuals.
About You
You will have completed a bachelor’s degree or diploma in mechanical engineering or in a closely related discipline. You will have excellent skills in CAD design as well as mechanical drawing and have a passion in analysis for precision mechanical engineering. You will be experienced in opto-mechanics for scientific or technical instrumentation. You are an excellent communicator with a proactive nature, flexible and you enjoy working individually or working as part of a larger team

We are excited to take a significant role in leading and growing Australia’s strength in astronomical instrumentation, partnering with the Australian National University and the University of Sydney under the banner of Astralis Instrumentation Consortium.
As part of our expansive new vision, AAO-Macquarie’s team of experts will build on the University’s existing strengths in astronomy, photonics, laser technology, microfabrication, applied optics and sensing communications, with the aim of increasing industry engagement, identifying opportunities to apply AAO-Macquarie’s expertise to medicine and defence, and expanding its presence in the fields of optics and sensing, in addition to the ongoing mission of world-leading excellence in astronomical instrumentation.

Essential:
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in mechanical engineering or related discipline;
- Demonstrated skills in CAD design and mechanical drawing production;
- Demonstrated skills in analysis for precision mechanical engineering;
- Proven track record in opto-mechanics for scientific or technical instrumentation;
- Knowledge of and/or training in systems engineering practises for technical projects;
- Experience collaborating and working as part of a multi-discipline team.
Salary Package: Level 7 from $99,739 to $108,139 per annum,
plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading.
Appointment Type: Full-time, fixed term for 3 years
