About the role:

This is an exciting prospect to progress your career and obtain valuable experience working as a Police Lawyer within an established, contemporary and agile organisation. Victoria Police's Legal Services Department, Prosecutions Division, is enhancing its advocacy response in an effort to meet the expansion of court networks and jurisdictions across Victoria.

Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand in the South East Prosecutions Region by enhancing their prosecutorial membership with enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated Police Lawyers. The South East Prosecution Region consists of four prosecution units that service seven court locations in regional Victoria. One ongoing Police Lawyer vacancy currently exists within the region:

- Latrobe Prosecutions Unit based in Hazelwood Road, Morwell – servicing Latrobe Valley Magistrates and Children's Courts. Whilst based at Latrobe, the successful applicant will also be required to support the South Gippsland Prosecutions Unit and appear in the Korumburra and Wonthaggi Magistrates and Children's Court.

Together with sworn police prosecutors, Police Lawyers prosecute a range of matters across multiple court jurisdictions. Depending on your skills and experience, initially your role will focus on case management and advocacy of Intervention Order applications and associated proceedings. This role offers an opportunity to develop and apply your skills to an array of matters that vary in complexity. As a Police Lawyer your role will extend into other areas within the civil and criminal jurisdictions. This position offers ongoing professional development opportunities where you will be supported to extend your skills and apply these within and away from the court room.

As the successful applicant you will need to demonstrate an ability to handle demanding court lists, manage competing priorities effectively, be self-driven and solution-focused. You will be required to apply a high level of attention to detail, have exceptional time-management skills and the ability to maintain detailed and accurate records. The South East Prosecutions Region prides itself on the Divisions' successful hybrid lawyer-prosecutor staffing profile and positive workplace culture. Accordingly, the successful applicant will be expected to work within a team environment where collaboration is modelled, and multiple members contribute to the ongoing case management of files, applications and briefs of evidence through to finalisation at court.

Your duties will include:

- Regularly appear as an advocate and present evidence in criminal, civil and/or administrative proceedings on behalf of Victoria Police. (I.e. family violence and personal safety intervention orders,



criminal matters, confiscations and proceeds of crime applications, firearms applications and licensing matters.)
- Caseload management and associated administrative tasks.
- Exercise sound understanding of legislation and Victoria Police policy through the provision of legal advice/information to a range of clients in the areas of family violence, criminal prosecutions, civil law, and other areas as directed.
- Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships within Victoria Police.
- Work with internal and external stakeholders across agencies to ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm are employed.
- Prepare court lists in advance of hearing dates.
- Analyse evidence, conduct legal research and prepare cases to present in court.
- Compile written correspondence ranging from internal communiques to written submissions for tender in court.
- Exercise professional and audience-tailored communication (written and verbal) with affected family members, affected persons (victims), respondents and witnesses; each varying in age, gender, ability and demographic.
- Establish and maintain productive working relationships with legal representatives and court staff.

You will provide support and assistance to Police Prosecutors, Senior and Supervising Lawyers in the management of more complex cases. You may also be required to provide professional guidance to Legal Support Officers as directed by your senior managers.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

- Ability to work in a team and in a developing and demanding work environment.
- Sound judgment, a high level of resilience and emotional intelligence.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer.
- Australian Practising Certificate or be immediately eligible to apply for one.
- Current driver's licence.

Requirements and relevant information:

- One (1) x Full time, fixed-term until 27 April 2024.
- The salary range for a VPS3 role is $ $73,842 to $89,661 (covering salary ranges VPSG 3.1 and VPSG 3.2). Although it is standard practice for selected candidates to commence at the base of the salary range, genuine consideration will be given to a commencement salary within the available range that is commensurate with the successful candidate's knowledge, skills and experiences. This will be subject to negotiations with the Hiring Manager in the course of the selection process and may include the provision of evidence of a higher income and/or supporting documentation (as required).
- This position is located at level 1, 15 Hazelwood Road, Morwell.
- Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.




- The successful applicant will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
- In accordance with organisational policy, all Victoria Police employees are required to be fully vaccinated (including a booster vaccination) against COVID-19 or hold a valid medical exception. As such your employment with Victoria Police is subject to providing evidence of your vaccination status.
- As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity. However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department. This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
