BEST Gift Group

City of Sydney

Best Restaurants is Australia's longest-standing hospitality directory and gift card platform, born as the country's first-ever online dining publication. Over the years we've evolved visually, stylistically, and in tone of voice; but our mission has stayed the same: to make dining accessible, fun, simple, aspirational, sexy, modern, progressive, welcoming, and backed by storytelling.

We're now investing in a dedicated content function, and we're looking for the person to build it from the ground up with support from the wider team.

About Us

Best Restaurants is Australia's longest-standing hospitality directory and gift card platform, born as the country's first-ever online dining publication. Over the years we've evolved visually, stylistically, and in tone of voice; but our mission has stayed the same: to make dining accessible, fun, simple, aspirational, sexy, up-to-date, progressive, welcoming, and backed by storytelling.

We're now investing in a dedicated content function, and we're looking for the person to build it from the ground up with support from the wider team.

The Role

This is a newly created role for a natural storyteller who wants to set the agenda for how Australia talks about dining and hospitality, not just report on it.

You'll sit within the brand team, shaping the storytelling of Best Restaurants and building content initiatives that position us as a thought-provoking, culturally relevant food voice. You'll have significant creative freedom to develop the ideas, angles, and formats that make people stop scrolling and start reading, watching, and sharing.

This is a content direction and ideation role first, and a writing role second. You'll lean into shaping stories and pitching angles,

working with a network of freelance writers, a social team, and a head of brand who backs bold ideas.

What You'll Do

- Develop content ideas and initiatives that build cultural relevance for Best Restaurants, sparking conversation and challenging perceptions around food, dining, and hospitality.

- Pitch and chase stories directly - picking up the phone to chefs, restaurant owners, industry figures, and even other publications to make things happen.

- Identify and pursue timely, newsworthy, or culturally resonant angles (think: tracking down the most expensive lunch in Australia) and see them through from idea to publication.

- Partner with the brand team to bring stories to life across formats: reels, social content, influencer activations, and more, anything to maximise reach and impact.

- Direct a pool of freelance writers to help execute your content pipeline.

- Work closely with the social team to atomise and distribute content effectively across channels.

- Bring a genuine point of view on food, culture, and dining trends, and use it to inform editorial direction.

- Help rebuild and shape the content function itself, with the freedom to define how it operates.

What We're Looking For

- Prior experience in media, journalism, digital publishing, magazines, or a broader content-related role.

- Comfortable with words but more excited by ideation, angles,

and content strategy than by writing alone.

- A confident pitcher: comfortable picking up the phone, reaching out cold, and asking for things even when the answer might be no.

- Genuinely curious, opinionated, and socially switched-on, with informed views on food and culture.

- Ambitious and trend-setting in mindset - someone who wants to shape dining conversations in Australia, not just follow them.

- Comfortable with risk and keen to make a mark by building something new, rather than maintaining something established.

- Possibly currently in an assistant or coordinator-level content role and ready to take on ownership and creative freedom.

What You'll Have Access To

- A roster of freelance writers to support execution of your content ideas.

- A dedicated social team to atomise and distribute content across channels.

- Content upload and website support infrastructure.

- A head of brand who actively backs bold ideas and isn't afraid to break the algorithm.

Why Join

This is a rare opportunity to build a content department from scratch at a brand with genuine heritage in Australian dining media, and real appetite to take risks. If you've been waiting for the room to run with your ideas, this is it and plus a few more perks below:

- Birthday leave because who wants to work on their birthday

- Year-round hybrid work culture – 3 days a week in our Darlinghurst office

- Competitive remuneration package

- 50% discount with vendor partners across restaurants and wellness providers

- Commitment to talent development and progression

- Regular team bonding and engagement initiatives
