About the Role
We are looking for a General Service Officer/Cleaner to join our Client’s team in Fyshwick, Canberra. The position is hands-on with a strong focus on cleaning, presentation and upkeep of public spaces. You will primarily be responsible for cleaning duties such as litter collection, amenities cleaning and general site presentation, while also potentially assisting with mowing, pruning, vegetation maintenance and other general outdoor maintenance tasks as required.

- Hours: Typically 38 hours per week

- Duration: 3 months
Key Responsibilities
- Perform grounds, horticultural and general outdoor maintenance across public spaces and community areas
- Carry out mowing, edging, weeding, pruning and general vegetation maintenance
- Complete litter collection, fallen leaf removal, cleaning and presentation duties
- Assist with the cleaning of public facilities, amenities and surrounding areas
- Operate mowers, blowers, whipper snippers and other horticultural or maintenance equipment safely
- Conduct pre-start inspections of vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment
- Complete basic equipment maintenance and promptly report faults or damage
- Assist with tree, shrub and weed management activities
- Follow allocated work programs, supervisor directions and daily maintenance schedules
- Read and follow Standard Operating Procedures, equipment manuals and relevant safety information
- Identify hazards and maintain safe work areas around members of the public and other workers
- Follow WHS requirements and correctly use required PPE
- Drive between worksites or operational locations where required
- Work effectively both independently and as part of an operational crew
- Communicate completed work, hazards and additional maintenance requirements to supervisors
- Use mobile devices where required to receive instructions, communicate and record work activities
- Maintain qualified conduct when working around members of the Canberra community
- Contribute to consistently high standards of cleanliness, safety and presentation across assigned areas
About You
You will ideally bring practical experience in parks and gardens, horticulture, grounds maintenance, landscaping, council operations, facilities maintenance or another physically demanding outdoor environment.
Mandatory Requirements
- Recent National Police Check already completed and available
- Current C Class driver's licence
- Current White Card
- Current Asbestos Awareness Card
- Current Silica Awareness Certificate
- Valid Australian working rights (no sponsorships available)
- Ability to provide evidence of required licences, tickets and compliance documentation promptly
- Ability to safely meet the physical and manual handling requirements of the role
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Willingness to wear required uniform and PPE
- Ability to work from different depots or locations where operationally required
Highly Regarded
- Medium Rigid (MR) driver's licence or higher
- Temporary Traffic Management qualification
- Previous parks, gardens, horticulture, landscaping or grounds maintenance experience
- Experience operating commercial mowing and horticultural machinery
- Experience within government, council or public-space maintenance environments
- Experience completing machinery and vehicle pre-start checks
- Basic equipment maintenance and fault identification experience
You will be physically capable of undertaking regular manual work including walking, lifting, bending, squatting, reaching and repetitive tasks. The source position requirements also involve frequent outdoor work, machinery operation and driving between worksites.
Reliability is essential. You should be punctual, safety conscious and comfortable following instructions while also being capable of working independently. Good communication skills, basic literacy and confidence using a mobile device in the workplace are also important.
