Experienced in bookkeeping and payroll and looking for a professional role that fits within school hours?
We're looking for an experienced Bookkeeper & Payroll Officer who can hit the ground running and take ownership of the day-to-day bookkeeping and payroll functions across two growing businesses.
This is a hands-on role for someone who is currently working in, or has very recently worked in, bookkeeping and payroll and is confident managing the function with minimal supervision.
You'll need to know your way around Xero, weekly payroll, AP/AR, reconciliations, superannuation and current Australian payroll requirements. We'll show you how our businesses operate and take you through our internal processes, but we're looking for someone who already has the technical knowledge and practical experience to step in and get started.
What you'll get stuck into
- Take ownership of the day-to-day bookkeeping and payroll functions across both businesses.
- Independently process weekly payroll for casual labour hire employees and internal staff.
- Coordinate timesheets and payroll approvals, identifying and resolving discrepancies prior to payroll processing.
- Process superannuation and maintain accurate payroll and employee records.
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Complete daily bank, credit card and account reconciliations.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records in Xero.
- Coordinate invoices, supplier accounts, purchase orders and payment runs.
- Support month-end processes, reporting and BAS preparation.
- Ensure payroll is processed accurately and in accordance with current legislation, Modern Awards, employment conditions and internal requirements.
- Onboard new employees and coordinate payroll, compliance and mobilisation documentation.
- Onboard new clients and ensure required documentation and compliance checks are completed.
- Assist with client and internal reporting.
- Maintain cloud-based systems, user access and business data.
- Provide support across recruitment administration, compliance and general business operations where required.
- Identify opportunities to improve bookkeeping, payroll and administrative systems and workflows.
- Be the team's go-to person for day-to-day bookkeeping, payroll and accounts queries.
To be successful, you'll need:
- 3+ years' recent, hands-on experience in bookkeeping, payroll or a similar accounts-focused role.
- Demonstrated experience independently processing end-to-end payroll.
- Current working knowledge of Australian payroll legislation and requirements, including Modern Awards, PAYG, superannuation, leave entitlements and Fair Work obligations.
- Robust, hands-on experience using Xero.
- Demonstrated experience across accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank and credit card reconciliations and payment processing.
- Confidence interpreting timesheets, payroll information and employment conditions.
- The ability to identify discrepancies, investigate issues and follow them through to resolution.
- Excellent numerical accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, particularly around non-negotiable weekly payroll deadlines.
- The ability to work independently, prioritise your workload and take ownership of your responsibilities.
- Confidence communicating with employees, clients, suppliers and internal stakeholders.
Even better if you have
- Experience processing payroll for a casual, labour hire or variable-hours workforce.
- Experience working across multiple Modern Awards and employment conditions.
- Previous experience within recruitment, labour hire, mining or resources.
- Experience supporting BAS preparation and month-end processes.
- A Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, or similar qualification.
Who this role will suit
You'll be someone who genuinely enjoys bookkeeping and payroll and takes pride in knowing that the numbers are right.
You're organised, methodical and naturally detail focused. When something doesn't look right, you don't simply process it - you investigate it.
You're comfortable working autonomously and don't need someone to tell you what needs to happen each week to get payroll processed, accounts reconciled and payments organised.
You'll also enjoy working within a smaller, growing business where roles are varied and people pitch in. While bookkeeping and payroll are the primary focus of this position, you'll be happy to support employee onboarding, compliance, reporting and general operations when required.
Most importantly, we're looking for someone who can hit the ground running. We'll teach you our businesses, systems and internal processes, but you'll bring the bookkeeping and payroll expertise.
Why join us?
This is a great opportunity for an experienced bookkeeping and payroll professional who wants to continue doing meaningful, responsible work without committing to traditional full-time hours.
You'll have genuine ownership of your function, visibility across two growing businesses and the opportunity to help improve the systems and processes behind how we operate.
You'll join a cooperative team that values accountability, initiative, accuracy and continuous improvement - and where your experience will be genuinely valued.
If you're an experienced Bookkeeper & Payroll Officer with current, hands-on payroll knowledge and you're looking for a part time role that fits within school hours, we'd love to hear from you.
