In this non-teaching, operational management role, you will oversee end-to-end laboratory operations from preparing practical testing environments and managing CAD drafting setups to calibrating specialized testing machinery, procuring raw materials, and maintaining quality and safety compliance. You will ensure all physical laboratory testing infrastructure aligns fully with relevant Australian Standards and technical industry specifications.
Required Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
• Qualifications: Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering, Laboratory Technology, or a closely related technical discipline.
• Experience: Minimum 2+ years of hands-on experience in civil materials testing (concrete, soils, aggregates), technical lab facility management, or civil drafting/design support.
• Standards Knowledge: Robust working knowledge of Australian Standards (including AS 1012, AS 1289, and AS 1163 series) and civil construction principles.
• Technical Equipment & Software: Practical expertise operating, calibrating, and servicing civil lab machinery (e.g., Universal Testing Machines / UTM, PID-controlled drying ovens) and working with CAD modeling software.
• Work Rights: Open to all qualified applicants. Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents are strongly encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
• Civil Design & Technical Documentation: Prepare technical CAD schematics, structural calculation sheets, site-specific setup diagrams, batch designs,
and testing plans to support practical projects covering roads, pavements, drainage, and structural assemblies.
• Materials & Field Testing Operations: Perform, direct, and oversee physical laboratory testing and fieldwork on construction soils, aggregates, and concrete in strict accordance with relevant Australian Standards.
• Instruction Interpretation & Equipment Setup: Interpret complex engineering briefs, technical project specifications, and work assignment instructions to select appropriate testing apparatus, setup technical workstations, and formulate standard operating procedures.
• Data Computations & Quality Analysis: Collect, analyze, and compute physical test results, executing stress, load, tolerance, and compliance calculations on material samples and structural mock-ups.
• Budgeting, Cost Estimation & Procurement: Conduct material quantity take-offs, estimate civil material costs, manage laboratory procurement budgets, and source lab-grade supplies to ensure finished test batches conform strictly to engineering specifications.
• End-to-End Facility Maintenance & Inspection: Inspect incoming specimens, structural test rigs, and mock civil works against standards; supervise, organize, and execute total maintenance, calibration, and repair programs for all facility testing equipment.
• Technical Demonstrations & Survey Support: Demonstrate compliant physical testing methods and safe machinery operation during practical laboratory sessions, and assist in compiling data for simulated geotechnical, site, and traffic surveys.
