Share a Walk, a Smile and a Little Greek Conversation
A friendly gentleman living in a residential aged care home in Hurstville would enjoy spending time with a Greek-speaking volunteer who can share conversation, companionship and connection.
Having grown up in Greece and migrated to Australia in his 20s, he has lived a rich and engaging life. While dementia has made it harder for him to communicate in English, he remains warm, good-natured and enjoys the comfort of hearing his first language spoken.
Your visits might include:
- Enjoying a stroll around the neighbourhood
- Playing simple games together
- Sharing stories and conversation in Greek
- Offering friendship and companionship
This role would suit a patient, confident and compassionate volunteer who understands that meaningful connection comes in many forms, especially for someone living with dementia.
A friendly face, a shared language and time spent together can help bring comfort, joy and a sense of belonging each week.
Your impact
Volunteering as a social visitor can be a rewarding experience, both for the person you visit as well as yourself. Regular visits from volunteers can help to improve quality of life and help people feel less isolated.
