Disability Support Worker - Children & Young People | Casual | Newcastle, Lake Macquarie & Hunter

$45.28 - $46.70/hr weekdays | $63.39 - $65.38/hr Saturdays | $81.50 - $84.06/hr Sundays (SCHADS SACS Level 2 casual). No shifts under 6 hours. Set roster.

The honest version first

We support children and young people who are non-verbal, autistic and/or living with intellectual disability, many with significant behaviours of concern. The work is genuinely rewarding and genuinely hard, and we would rather you know exactly how hard before you apply.

A real shift can look like this: you are working one-on-one, often solo, in the participant's home or out in the community. You help with showering, toileting and incontinence care. You are on your feet for hours, near roads and car parks, staying alert the whole time. A participant may become distressed in public while strangers watch; your job is to stay calm, follow their documented plan exactly, and keep everyone safe. Afterwards you write transparent, factual shift notes to an audited standard, every shift, no exceptions. Families are sometimes under real stress, and feedback can be blunt; staying professional through that is part of the role.

You follow each participant's plans precisely as written. You do not design or change them, and no verbal request from anyone overrides a documented plan. If that sounds restrictive, this is not the job for you. If it sounds like clarity, keep reading.

Why our workers stay

You support the same participant each shift and build a real relationship over years, not weeks. Several of our team have supported the same participant for 3-8 years.

No shifts under 6 hours. Your casual roster is set and protected; we respect your time outside it.

Small provider, two directors, no layers. The people who answer your calls are the people who run the company.

Paid induction, paid shadow shifts before you work alone, and ongoing paid training.

Pay is under the SCHADS Award (SACS Level 2). Weekday casual $45.28 - $46.70/hr, Saturday $63.39 - $65.38/hr, Sunday $81.50 - $84.06/hr, public holidays higher again. Sleepover shifts are paid under the Award's sleepover provisions; we will walk you through the exact numbers at the phone screen.

This job is probably not for you if

- You are uncomfortable with personal care, including toileting and incontinence care
- You want to design supports or “do it your way” rather than follow documented plans exactly
- Detailed daily written documentation feels like a chore you would cut corners on
- You cannot stay calm when a child is distressed, or when a stressed family member is short with you
- You need physical work to be light: this role involves hours of standing and walking, brisk movement to keep someone safe, and trained escort techniques

What you must have

- Full driver licence and a reliable, registered car with CTP and comprehensive insurance (essential, used every shift)
- Genuine availability for weekend day shifts and/or weekday sleepovers
- The physical capability to safely perform the role's inherent requirements (sustained standing and walking, bending and kneeling for personal care, moving quickly to keep a participant safe, shifts over 6 hours), with or without reasonable adjustments
- Willingness to obtain before starting unsupervised work: NDIS Worker Screening Check, Working With Children Check, First Aid (HLTAID011) with current CPR, NDIS Worker Orientation Module
- Comfort using a phone or tablet for rosters, notes and incident reporting
- No qualification or industry experience is required. We hire for reliability, calm and coachability, and we train the rest. A Certificate III in Individual Support or experience with autism, AAC or de-escalation is a bonus, not a requirement. We welcome applicants of all ages and backgrounds.

Cosmic Care Pty Ltd is an NDIS registered provider supporting children and young people across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter.
