Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN) as an Aboriginal Health Worker and play a vital role in delivering culturally secure, holistic, and family-centred care. Working alongside children, families, carers, and multidisciplinary teams, you will provide advocacy, support, and guidance to help families navigate health and community services while ensuring Aboriginal perspectives, culture, and family priorities are embedded in care.

What You'll Be Doing The Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) will collaborate with patients, carers, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to provide flexible, holistic, and culturally safe services for Aboriginal children and families accessing the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN). The role ensures care is culturally responsive, strengths-based, and tailored to the unique needs of Aboriginal children, families, and communities, fostering trust, engagement, and improved health outcomes. The AHW will provide culturally informed advocacy and support, assisting families to navigate complex health, social, and community systems, both within the hospital and through connections to local, NSW, and interstate services.

The role facilitates communication between families and healthcare providers, ensuring that Aboriginal perspectives,

cultural practices, and family priorities are respected and integrated into care planning. Additionally, the AHW will actively participate in quality improvement, service evaluation, and policy initiatives,



to ensure Aboriginal health priorities are appropriately represented and that service delivery is equitable. The position requires strong advocacy, liaison, and stakeholder engagement skills to influence organisational practice, enhance cultural safety, and contribute to improved health outcomes for Aboriginal children and their families.

Through leadership, collaboration, and a commitment to culturally safe practice, the AHW supports SCHN in providing care that is respectful, inclusive, and responsive to the holistic needs of Aboriginal children and their families.

- This is an Aboriginal-identified position. Applicants must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, as defined under Section 14 (d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
- Holds or is working towards, a minimum of Certificate III in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a Certificate III health qualification relevant to the area of practice in which the Aboriginal Health Worker works.
- Extensive experience engaging with Aboriginal people, families, and communities in a culturally safe, trauma-informed, and strengths-based manner.
- Demonstrated ability to build trust, maintain meaningful relationships, and support families navigating complex health and social systems.
- Highly developed communication, liaison, and advocacy skills, with the ability to represent the needs and perspectives of Aboriginal children, young people, and families across clinical, community, and organisational settings. Proven capacity to communicate with influence and facilitate effective partnerships
- Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and deliver culturally appropriate education, programs, and resources that respond to community priorities
- Able to translate cultural knowledge and community feedback into practical initiatives that enhance health access,



cultural safety, and family experience.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively and professionally with a diverse range of stakeholders, including multidisciplinary teams, Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, government and non-government services, and local communities. Demonstrated capacity to lead culturally informed discussions, coordinate care, and champion positive outcomes through integrated service delivery.

Permanent NSW Health roles require Australian citizenship or permanent residency. Temporary visa holders may be considered where no suitable Australian citizen or permanent resident is identified.

This position requires a Working with Children Check (WWCC) issued by the Office of the Children’s Guardian.

Where required, overseas qualifications must be formally assessed by the Department of Education or relevant authority for recognition in Australia.
