Primary objective To promote Aboriginal culture and cultural security of Aboriginal clients and advise staff on approaches appropriate to addressing mental health problems and illnesses from a cultural perspective.

Context statement

Utilising prior experience preferably in a mental health setting, take a role in the step up – step down Mental Health Sub





Acute Facility as a cultural advocate for Aboriginal clients and provide cultural insights to the Team to improve understanding and communication between clinicians and Aboriginal people.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Work collaboratively within a step up – step down Sub Acute Facility to provide cultural knowledge and expertise, assist

in delivering Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Education and to assist in the assessment, planning, delivery of services to Aboriginal consumers; providing cultural insight and information to improve understanding and communication between

Team staff and Aboriginal consumers, carers and stakeholders.

1. Participate in the multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss the care, management and treatment of Aboriginal

consumers.
1. Effectively advocate on behalf of Aboriginal consumers and their families/carers around aspects of mental health to

improve overall mental health outcomes.
1. Participate in professional development activities based on identified consumer and staff education needs.
2. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being

undertaken in order to ensure high quality, secure services and workplaces.




- Participate in quality initiatives including accreditation processes.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Knowledge and understanding of the issues facing Aboriginal consumers experiencing mental illness in Central Australia.
2. Demonstrated ability to self-manage within a team, and the ability to provide Aboriginal cultural expertise and advice

within a multi-disciplinary team setting.
- High level of oral and written communication skills with the ability to maintain confidentiality.

1. Proven ability to communicate and interact effectively with health professionals and Aboriginal community members.
2. Demonstrated Information Technology skills and ability to maintain client records.
3. Possess an NT Driver’s license or ability to obtain one and willingness to travel when required.

Desirable

1. Relevant experience working within a Social and Emotional Framework and/or relevant mental health qualifications.
2. Demonstrated ability to speak and understand at least one Aboriginal language of Central Australia.

Further information The preferred or recommended applicant will be required to hold a current working with children clearance notice and undergo a criminal history check. A criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is relevant to the position. This role carries specific immunisation requirements. To be eligible for appointment you will be required to meet the immunisation requirements associated with Category A healthcare workers (direct contact with blood or body substances).
