Company Description Rafiki Mwema began in 2011 in a small rented house in Kenya, providing refuge for girls who were victims of sexual abuse while their court cases were heard. The organization has since grown to four homes and now therapeutically parents around 70 children on a secure property, while continuing to support those reintegrated into caring families and communities.

Mwema’s mission is to heal each child from trauma through attachment, love, and empathy, using an Attachment Play Program tailored to children who have experienced significant abuse. The organisation works closely with families, schools, villages, and government stakeholders to break the cycle of abuse and drive systemic cultural change, reducing the stigma around sexual abuse. Behind the scenes, Rafiki Mwema undertakes extensive work to protect children, support their healing, and pursue justice, offering volunteers an opportunity to contribute to meaningful, lasting transformation.
Role Description The Board Treasurer is a volunteer, remote role responsible for overseeing Rafiki Mwema’s financial health and supporting strong governance. Day-to-day tasks include reviewing financial statements, monitoring cash flow, and working with the Board and leadership team to develop budgets and long-term financial plans that align with the organization’s mission.
The Treasurer provides guidance on financial risk management,
ensures appropriate accounting controls and reporting processes are in place, and helps maintain compliance with relevant regulatory and donor requirements. This role also includes presenting financial information in a clear, accessible way at board meetings, contributing to strategic discussions, and supporting fundraising and resource allocation decisions with sound financial analysis.
Qualifications
- Strong finance and financial planning skills, with experience in supporting strategic decision-making.
- Ability to interpret, review, and present financial statements clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
- Competence in budgeting and accounting practices, including monitoring expenditures and maintaining accurate records.
- Prior experience in nonprofit or charity financial management, or board-level governance, is highly beneficial.
- Capacity to work effectively in a remote, volunteer setting, with reliable access to digital communication tools.
- High level of integrity, accountability, and commitment to child protection and trauma-informed practice.
- Robust analytical, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to contribute to strategic planning.
- Relevant qualifications or professional experience in finance, accounting, or a related field are an advantage.
