Traffic Services Branch (TSB) contributes to SAPOL Our Strategy 2030, including the vision, five principles and values by providing strategic centralised traffic policing service that works in partnership with government and community partners to reduce the number and severity of road trauma. We aim to achieve this by improving existing collaborations and building new working relationships with other road safety stakeholders and the community.

TSB works closely with Districts/Regions to coordinate implementation of both the current State Road Safety Strategy and SAPOL Road Action Safety Plan 2023-2026 with a heavy focus on education and enforcement utilising intelligence-led deployments for effective road safety operations.

The function of MCIS is to investigate fatal, serious, hit-run (with serious injury), SAPOL serious injury and public interest crashes and to compile reports in relation to these crashes.

The Vehicle Examiner is accountable for the effective investigation, examination and assessment of vehicles involved in fatal incidents and serious injury crashes, and of vehicles involved in the commission of serious criminal offences. The incumbent will be required to provide an immediate response to attend the scene of state-wide collisions, gather and preserve evidence and produce reports providing detailed technical assessment and opinion as to the mechanical condition of the vehicles and other modes of transport.

The incumbent will also be required to participate in formal training in appropriate modules of the Crime Scene Investigators Course, conducted by the Forensic Services Branch of South Australia Police, and will then need to apply this knowledge during the course of their duties. Additional training in gathering and preserving evidence, photographing evidence in‑situ and the subsequent interpretation of this evidence may be required.





The position requires the incumbent to perform vehicle examinations on a day shift roster as well as on an “on-call” roster for after hours for which an allowance is paid. The incumbent will be based at Holden Hill Police Complex and Gillman Police Vehicle Compound, however they must be willing to undertake the duties of the position at any location in South Australia. Travel and overnight absences are a feature of this position. It is assumed a reasonable amount of overtime may be required to meet work commitments.

The duties of the incumbent will necessitate physical examination of vehicles at the scene of a collision and require the incumbent to undertake a detailed mechanical evaluation in order to assess fully the potential causes of crashes.

The incumbent will be required to attend crash scenes where deceased persons are still inside vehicles. The incumbent will also be exposed to human remains and various bodily fluids and maybe required to assist other SAPOL members with their removal. All staff attached to MCIS are required to undertake an annual, unit specific psychological evaluation through SAPOL’s Employee Assistance Section.

The incumbent must hold a current SA car and heavy vehicle driver’s licence and must be prepared to be appointed as an Inspector under the Road Traffic Act 1961 and an Authorised Officer under the National Heavy Vehicle Law (South Australia) Act 2013.

Special Conditions

The incumbent must hold a current Australian work eligibility status and will be subject to a criminal history check.The incumbent may be assigned to other duties at this remuneration level or equivalent.Some out of hours work and intra/interstate travel may be required.The incumbent is required to participate in SAPOL’s iEngage program.

Salary

OPS4 - $82,212 - $86,180 per annum.
