About the role

Mater Private Hospital Mackay is delighted to offer an exciting career progression opportunity for two experienced High Dependency Unit (HDU) Registered Nurses to step into Clinical Nurse leadership positions. These permanent 0.5 FTE positions offer flexibility and work-life balance while providing a meaningful opportunity to advance your nursing career. The successful applicants will be required to work across a rotating 24/7 roster in accordance with operational requirements.

This is a fantastic opportunity for passionate and highly skilled nurses looking to further develop their leadership capabilities while continuing to provide exceptional patient care in a dynamic and high-acuity clinical workplace. As a Clinical Nurse, you will play a key role in supporting the Nurse Unit Manager, mentoring staff, driving clinical excellence, and contributing to the ongoing development of the HDU service.

Salary range: $57.48 - $61.55 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!

What you’ll be doing

- Achieving optimal patient outcomes throughout the patient journey and the continuum of care
- Demonstrating exceptional clinical expertise and knowledge of emergency procedures and the management of patients seeking outstanding care
- Maintaining current knowledge and skills to ensure continued professional growth
- Supporting the Nurse Unit Manager in implementing strategies to ensure that quality and risk management are integrated into service provision
- Lead, participate and collaborate with other key stakeholders in the design and implementation of continuous improvement activities and models of care for enhanced service provision.
- Liaise with other senior nursing roles and multidisciplinary teams to ensure strong communication networks are maintained.




- Identify and actively communicate future issues and new directions for the service.
- Escalate issues impacting on clinical practice and care delivery.
- Establishes and promotes effective model of care with family that ensure continuity of care.

About you

- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA
- Demonstrated clinical experience in a High Dependency Unit (HDU) with the ability to manage high-acuity and clinically complex patients.
- Advanced patient assessment skills, including early recognition and escalation of patient deterioration and changing clinical conditions.
- Proficiency in cardiac monitoring, ECG interpretation, rhythm recognition, and the management of patients requiring high-flow oxygen and respiratory support.
- Competency in the safe administration and management of IV infusions and high-risk medications, including heparin, CADD pumps, arterial lines, and central venous access devices.
- Strong clinical decision-making, prioritisation and time management skills, with the ability to work autonomously while escalating appropriately when required.
- Demonstrated leadership capability, including supporting, mentoring and guiding junior and less experienced staff within the clinical environment.
- Commitment to education, professional development and staff capability building through mentorship, training and knowledge sharing.
- Active participation in quality improvement, patient safety and evidence-based practice initiatives to support excellence in patient care.
- Excellent communication and multidisciplinary teamwork skills, fostering positive collaboration with patients, families and healthcare teams.
- Professionalism, accountability and flexibility, including a willingness to support the NUM with operational requirements, service development, policy implementation, staff education and continuous improvement activities within the HDU.
