About the role

Our client, a Sydney-based managed services provider, needs a genuinely senior infrastructure engineer for an ongoing casual based contractor based from our Sydney based CBD office.

We are looking for someone who can walk into an unfamiliar environment, work out how it is actually built (not how the documentation says it is built), and stabilise it. You will be working across multiple client environments, so the ability to context-switch cleanly and communicate technical risk to non-technical stakeholders matters as much as the hands-on skill.

What you'll be doing

- Diagnosing and resolving complex Windows Server and Active Directory issues — DC design and recovery, FSMO role placement and seizure, Group Policy troubleshooting, DNS and DHCP at a "why is replication broken" level
- Designing and troubleshooting identity across Entra ID and hybrid environments — hybrid join, Conditional Access policy, SSO/SAML/OAuth federation, MFA rollouts and break-glass account design
- Supporting and improving Microsoft 365 estates — Exchange Online mail flow and transport rules, SharePoint and Teams architecture, Purview fundamentals, and advising on the licensing implications of design decisions
- Working across client networks — VLANs, routing, firewall policy (Fortinet, Sophos and Meraki are common), site-to-site and SSL VPN — with enough packet-level capability to prove where a problem isn't
- Owning backup and disaster recovery outcomes — Veeam or equivalent, genuine restore testing, immutability, 3-2-1-1-0, and holding credible RPO/RTO conversations directly with clients
- Lifting security posture — EDR, patch and vulnerability management, hardening baselines and Essential Eight alignment




- Automating the repetitive work — PowerShell as a daily tool for remediation, bulk change and reporting, not as a line on a CV
- Contributing to Azure work as it comes up. IaaS, VNets, ExpressRoute/VPN, Azure Files and migration projects (AWS exposure useful but not essential)
- Documenting what you build and fix so the rest of the team can support it after you leave

What we need from you

- Demonstrable senior-level infrastructure experience, ideally gained in an MSP or multi-client environment
- Deep Windows Server and Active Directory troubleshooting ability — you have recovered a domain, not just joined machines to one
- Strong Entra ID and Microsoft 365 administration, including hybrid identity and Conditional Access
- Practical networking and firewall skills across at least one major vendor platform
- Real backup and DR experience, including having run restores under pressure
- Working PowerShell scripting capability
- Azure IaaS exposure — enough to be useful on migration and infrastructure work
- Clear written and verbal communication, and the confidence to explain risk to a client and hold the line on it
- Australian working rights and the ability to work onsite in St Leonards five days a week

Nice to have: Essential Eight assessment experience, Veeam certification, relevant Microsoft certifications (AZ-800/801, SC-300), AWS exposure.
