What we do
The Application Infrastructure branch is responsible for the provisioning and support of underlying applications and databases that support the agency’s critical services. This includes performing ongoing maintenance to ensure vendor support and stability, providing incident investigation and performance analysis using advanced monitoring solutions.
About the roles
We are recruiting across two technical roles:
- Mainframe technologies
- Environments / non-production platforms
ICT Technical Engineering Experts manage and maintain ICT platforms, including design, configuration, deployment, security and operations.
Technical Engineering Experts use deep platform knowledge to deliver reliable, secure and high-performing systems. They provide authoritative technical advice, support strategic direction and lead the management of complex technical environments.
At the EL1 level, the role operates with a high degree of independence, setting priorities, managing outcomes and influencing decisions in line with business objectives. The role leads staff, drives improvement and contributes to broader organisational outcomes.
Both roles require leadership and management skills.
- Lead a team to increase performance and engagement through coaching and capability development.
- Lead and evaluate operational practices to ensure continuous improvements; contribute to strategic planning.
- Effectively engage with, and communicate technical information to internal and external stakeholders with varying technical understanding and literacy.

The key duties of the position include:
Role 1: Mainframe technologies
- Lead the operation and maintenance of mainframe environments, including patching, upgrades and lifecycle management.
- Monitor system performance and capacity, and undertake tuning and optimisation to maintain stability and reliability.
- Manage and resolve complex incidents, including detailed problem analysis and root cause investigation.
- Provide expert advice on mainframe technologies and database environments, including system integration and connectivity.
- Support and manage technical change activities, ensuring minimal disruption and system integrity.
Role 2: Environments / non-production platforms
- Lead the build, configuration and ongoing support of non-production environments to enable development, testing and deployment activities.
- Manage environment availability, performance and reliability across multiple systems and platforms.
- Coordinate environment provisioning and readiness to support release, testing and integration activities.
- Establish and maintain environment management processes, standards and security controls.
- Identify and implement improvements to environment management practices to support efficient and reliable delivery.
Eligibility
- Security Clearance level required: Negative Vetting Level 1 (or ability to obtain and maintain)

Services Australia requires applicants to be Australian citizens to be eligible for employment with Services Australia.
An applicant’s suitability for employment with the agency will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes but is not limited to a national police history check, referee checks, code of conduct check and an employment history integrity check.
Some positions within Services Australia may be required to work in settings where mandatory vaccinations are required. Staff in such positions will need to demonstrate that they meet the vaccination requirements or have a relevant exemption.
