Detention Maintenance Specialist

Employment Status: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Experience Required: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in building and grounds maintenance activities.

Minimum Education Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Department: Corrections

Direct Supervisor: Detention Lieutenant

Supervisory Responsibility: Direct (0)

- Indirect (0)

Primary Work Location: Works primarily indoors but may be required to perform tasks outside.

Certification: This position requires a valid New Mexico Driver’s License.

Job Summary: To perform general maintenance and repair work on the Otero County Detention Center. To perform a variety of technical duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Essential Job Functions An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:

- Perform a variety of building maintenance duties including routine plumbing, electrical, and HVAC activities; maintain electrical and plumbing fixtures.
- Inspect building and facility for damage, vandalism and unauthorized use.
- Clean and maintain equipment.
- Supervise inmates on a full range of custodial duties.
- Maintain records and logs of work performed.
- Replace burned out and defective florescent tubes and light bulbs; replace burned out ballasts and broken light switches.
- Repair and maintain security equipment and program door locks.
- Repair and troubleshoot kitchen equipment.
- Order supplies needed for repairs and maintenance.
- Repair and maintain all laundry equipment.
- Perform facility welding tasks and repairs.
- Repair bathroom plumbing fixtures; replace or repair leaking faucets and damaged lavatory sinks; unclog toilets, shower and sink drains.
- Remain on-call for emergencies as required.
- Other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (KSA’s) For Position An employee in this class must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:

Knowledge

- Hand and power tools used in routine mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work.
- Construction materials, supplies and methods.
- Basic principles of heating and cooling systems.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Skills

- Strong written and oral communications and relational skills.
- Follow and relay complex oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.
- Operate a variety of office equipment, including computer terminal, related software programs, printer, calculator, fax, and copier.

Abilities

- Learn electrical control panels and security systems.
- Perform the general maintenance and repair of small power equipment.
- Perform basic carpentry, plumbing electrical, and mechanical work.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Physical Demands The Following Physical Abilities Are Required:

- Essential and marginal functions may require maintain physical condition necessary for light to moderate lifting, walking, climbing, or standing for prolonged periods of time, and operating motorized vehicles.

Work Environment Travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, high voltage, grease, paint, various solvents, inmate’s body fluids, waste, and infectious materials. Safety Requirements The employee is expected to follow all safety procedures as required.
