Tech Council of Australia

Sydney

Director, Finance and Operations

Sydney or Melbourne – Hybrid

Tech Council of Australia The Tech Council of Australia (TCA) is the peak industry body for the Australian tech sector. Our 170+ members span startups, scaleups, Australian global companies and multinationals, making tech Australia's third-largest industry. We work closely with government, business and the wider community to support the ongoing creation, development and adoption of technology across every sector of the economy.

You'll join a high-calibre team of industry leaders, policy experts and community builders who are passionate about strengthening Australia's tech ecosystem and shaping the policies that underpin it, during an exciting time of growth for the TCA.

Mission of the Role

This is a pivotal leadership role at the TCA, responsible for the organisation's financial strategy and growth, and for the smooth running of its financial operations, accounting and compliance. You'll also lead business operations more broadly, including IT and systems management, governance and risk, acting as a trusted strategic advisor to the CEO and Board on complex financial and commercial matters.

This role will suit someone who can operate at both a strategic and hands-on level, equally comfortable presenting financial strategy to the Board as processing the weekly transactions, and who is energised by building strong foundations in a small, growing organisation.

Key Outcomes You'll Deliver

- Partner with the CEO and Board to develop TCA's long-term strategy, preparing annual budgets, multi-year forecasts and scenario modelling to support sustainable growth.
- Act as a trusted sounding board to the CEO and Board on complex financial, commercial, risk and organisational matters, and support funding proposals to government and other strategic partners.
- Develop financial strategies that maximise sustainability, diversify revenue and improve operational effectiveness.

- Own the weekly processing of transactions into Xero and monthly general ledger maintenance, alongside management of regular payroll processing.
- Monitor tax compliance (GST, PAYG, payroll tax) and prepare and lodge quarterly Business Activity Statements, Instalment Activity Statements and monthly payroll tax, including year-end reconciliations.
- Lead TCA's governance, financial control and enterprise risk management frameworks, developing and maintaining the policies, procedures and controls that underpin good governance and ensure statutory compliance.
- Manage the end-to-end annual and interim external audit process, prepare statutory financial statements in line with Australian Accounting Standards, and lead internal audit activity with remediation follow-through.
- Maintain oversight of insurance, legal, cybersecurity and business continuity arrangements.
- Deliver monthly financial reporting to the Board and Leadership Team, provide company secretariat support (including attending Board and Committee meetings), and manage TCA's IT systems and controls, including the CRM and external IT providers.
- Manage a small operations team, support the CEO on day-to-day HR matters, and act as an active member of the TCA Leadership Team - building organisational capability and fostering a culture of accountability and sound financial stewardship.

Our Ideal Candidate Will Have

- CPA or Chartered Accountant qualification.
- Robust accounting, reporting and general management skills, including hands-on experience with Xero.

- An understanding of IT systems and services suitable to a small NFP/SME.
- The ability to think quickly and decisively under pressure, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfort operating in a small team - happy to both set strategy and roll up your sleeves on day-to-day tasks.
- Prior experience as a CFO in a small NFP, and/or an understanding of membership organisations or the technology sector, is highly regarded.

Why Join the TCA

- A genuine seat at the leadership table, acting as a trusted advisor to the CEO and Board on TCA's financial and commercial direction.
- Competitive salary of $250,000–$270,000 (ex super), plus salary packaging benefits.
- Work with a highly regarded team and industry-leading Board - and a large, diverse group of Australian tech companies.
- Flexible hybrid work arrangements.
- The opportunity to build and shape the finance and operations function of a growing, nationally significant organisation.

This position is a full-time permanent role, with a six-month probation period, based in Sydney or Melbourne.
