About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an emerging journalist to join The Catholic Weekly and create original, engaging stories for the news service of the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney across print and digital platforms.

Reporting to the Editor of The Catholic Weekly, you will write for diverse audiences consuming Catholic media, contribute to broader Archdiocesan communications and help tell timely, compelling stories of faith. You will bring curiosity, sound news judgement and a strong understanding of the Catholic Church in Sydney, Australia and worldwide.





Working closely with the Editor and colleagues from the Sydney Centre for Evangelisation, you will:

Pitch, research, interview, and write news, features and other editorial content for The Catholic Weekly in print and digital formats.

Provide original photography, video, audio and other multi-platform as required.

Contribute content to Archdiocesan media, Sydney Centre for Evangelisation projects, Eucharist28 and social media channels as required

Create innovative, newsworthy and well-executed content aligned with a Catholic world view, including contributing original story ideas

Establish and maintain relevant contacts within and outside the Church, and participate in news conferences and briefings

Work reliably to tight deadlines and respond rapidly to issues as they arise

Maximise content using digital analytics, data, SEO and promotional tools, while staying current with digital trends

Participate in planning meetings, retreat days and formation opportunities, and work constructively within agreed editorial guidelines

Assist with communications plans and projects, including the collaborative planning, preparation and delivery of Eucharist28

This is a full-time position and is currently based in Leichhardt, with the role relocating to Elizabeth Street, Sydney CBD in the first quarter of 2027.

About You

You are an emerging journalist who can identify a strong story, write with clarity and accuracy, and tailor content for different audiences and platforms. You follow current affairs through a Catholic lens and combine initiative with the discipline to meet deadlines, accept feedback and work within editorial boundaries.

You will bring:

One to five years' experience with a Catholic, student, regional or community news outlet

A proven ability to write original,



accurate and compelling news content

Tertiary qualifications in journalism, media or communications, or equivalent professional experience

Strong knowledge of current issues facing the Catholic Church in Sydney and Australia, together with an understanding of the Church worldwide

The ability to build digital stories using a content management system such as WordPress and engage professionally through social media

Experience or demonstrated capability in multimedia publishing, including radio or podcasts and video

Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and time-management skills, with the ability to work to tight deadlines

A genuine commitment to the mission and values of the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney, the Sydney Centre for Evangelisation and Catholic social teaching

You are organised and attentive to detail, able to adapt to change and operate confidently within a complex organisation. You take responsibility for your performance, contribute as a team player and are receptive to feedback.

Above all, you bring energy, curiosity and a genuine desire to produce meaningful journalism that informs, engages and strengthens Catholic audiences.
