About the Role
Fire Central Pty Ltd is a specialist fire protection company dedicated to safeguarding lives and property across residential, commercial and industrial sectors throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.
We provide design, installation, testing, commissioning, routine servicing and maintenance across a broad range of fire protection systems, including fire detection and alarm, automatic fire sprinklers, fire hydrants, fire hose reels, Emergency Warning and Intercommunication Systems (EWIS), occupant warning systems and portable fire equipment.
As our business continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced Fire Services Designer to join our Melbourne team. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically capable and motivated fire industry professional to take ownership of fire services design and documentation while working closely with our project management and site delivery teams.
Key Responsibilities
As the Fire Services Designer, you will be responsible for:
- Designing fire protection systems, including automatic fire sprinklers, fire hydrants, fire hose reels, fire detection and alarm systems, occupant warning systems, EWIS and portable fire equipment.
- Interpreting architectural drawings, Fire Engineering Reports (FERs), BCA/NCC reports, specifications and other building services documentation.
- Preparing detailed fire services layouts, schematics, block plans, equipment schedules and associated design documentation.
- Preparing sprinkler and hydrant system layouts and undertaking hydraulic calculations where required.
- Preparing sprinkler pipework layouts, installation drawings and pipe fabrication sheets for site installation teams.
- Determining required system coverage,
pipework and device layouts, equipment locations and interfaces with other building services.
- Reviewing available water supply information and determining fire system water supply demand, flow and pressure requirements.
- Producing accurate and compliant fire services drawings using AutoCAD and Revit.
- Ensuring designs comply with applicable NCC requirements, Australian Standards, project specifications, Fire Engineering Reports and approved design documentation.
- Working with relevant Australian Standards, including AS 2118, AS 2419, AS 2441, AS 1670 and other applicable standards.
- Coordinating fire services with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and other building services.
- Identifying and resolving design clashes and constructability issues before and during installation.
- Liaising with project managers, site supervisors, technicians, consultants, builders, clients and other project stakeholders.
- Attending design, coordination and project meetings as required.
- Responding to technical queries and RFIs from project and site teams during construction.
- Supporting project team during installation, testing, commissioning and project handover.
- Preparing and maintaining tender, design, construction and as-built drawings.
- Maintaining drawing registers, revisions and design documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
Qualifications & Experience The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Minimum 3-5 year's experience in fire protection services design within the Australian construction or fire protection industry.
- Practical design experience across fire sprinkler, hydrant, hose reel, fire detection/alarm and/or EWIS systems.
- A relevant Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor's Degree or equivalent qualification in fire protection, fire engineering or other building services discipline.
- Strong working knowledge of relevant Australian Standards, NCC requirements and Victorian building industry requirements.
- High-level proficiency in AutoCAD, with Revit experience highly regarded.
- Experience undertaking hydraulic calculations using Hyena for sprinkler and/or hydrant systems.
- Experience preparing sprinkler pipe fabrication drawings will be highly regarded.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with clients, consultants, builders, subcontractors and internal project teams.
- Experience across commercial, healthcare, education, industrial and/or government projects will be highly regarded.
