Head of Marketing and Communications

Sydney or Melbourne – Hybrid

Tech Council of Australia The Tech Council of Australia (TCA) is the peak industry body for the Australian tech sector. Our 170+ members span startups, scaleups, Australian global companies and multinationals, making tech Australia's third-largest industry. We work closely with government, business and the wider community to support the ongoing creation, development and adoption of technology across every sector of the economy.

You'll join a high-calibre team of industry leaders, policy experts and community builders who are passionate about strengthening Australia's tech ecosystem and shaping the policies that underpin it, during an exciting time of growth for the TCA.

Mission of the Role

This role owns TCA's brand, strategic communications and public relations, leading the development and execution of integrated marketing and communications strategies that build TCA's profile as the national thought leader for the tech industry. You'll manage a small team and external partners delivering media engagement, high-quality content and impactful campaigns that bring TCA's policy and advocacy work to life, while reporting directly to the CEO on the function's performance.

This role will suit someone who can move seamlessly between strategy and hands-on execution, who thrives leading a small, lean team, and who wants their work to shape the national conversation on technology.

Key Outcomes You'll Deliver

- Develop and execute a comprehensive communications and PR strategy that positions TCA as the national thought leader for the tech industry.
- Build outstanding relationships with leading technology journalists and lead TCA's public relations activity across print, online and TV, including managing in-bound media enquiries and responses at moments of sensitivity.
- Develop and execute strategies for TCA's own announcements and policy statements,

proactively generating and managing media interest, and overseeing media monitoring and any external PR agencies.
- Develop a marketing strategy that promotes TCA's image and position, ensuring consistent messaging across all assets and to all stakeholders, internal and external.
- Own and maintain TCA's brand guidelines, ensuring all collateral produced across the organisation is on-brand and consistent.
- Develop and lead high-profile traditional and digital marketing campaigns, in partnership with external agencies and members, including "always-on" activity across paid, earned and owned channels.
- Ensure the TCA website stays on-brand, up to date, secure, and effective at generating and capturing leads.
- Lead and develop a small team (initially up to 2 FTE) delivering content across TCA's owned channels - EDMs, newsletters, social, website and op-eds - and support the research team to produce on-message, on-brand reports.
- Build the systems and processes needed for the smooth day-to-day running of the marketing and communications function, manage its budget with support from the CFO, and support the CEO in reporting to the Board.
- Partner with the Membership & Engagement team on event marketing and the Policy team on messaging, own internal communications, and contribute to organisational strategy as a member of the senior leadership team.

Our Ideal Candidate Will Have

- A relevant tertiary qualification in Communications or Public Relations, or equivalent experience.

- Outstanding written communication skills, with experience drafting for broad audiences, including press releases and news articles.
- A track record developing and delivering communications and PR strategy, including hands-on delivery and crisis communications.
- Experience developing and delivering marketing strategies that build profile and reputation, and familiarity with tools to track campaign performance.
- Proven leadership experience building and getting the best from small, nimble teams.
- An understanding of and interest in the innovation and start-up ecosystem is highly regarded.

Why Join the TCA

- Genuine influence over the national narrative on technology, working directly with the CEO and Board.
- Market-competitive salary of $200,000 - $220,000 (ex super), plus salary packaging benefits.
- Work with a highly regarded team and industry-leading Board - and a large, diverse group of Australian tech companies shaping the profile of the sector.
- Flexible hybrid work arrangements.
- The chance to build and lead a function from the ground up, with real scope to shape how the TCA shows up publicly.

This position is a full-time permanent role, with a 6-month probation period, based in Sydney or Melbourne.
