Independent Schools NSW is the peak body supporting and representing independent schools in NSW and provides a range of services across NSW and ACT.
Position Purpose
This is a 9 month fixed-term contract with a focus on designing, developing and revising a range of self-paced online courses to support educators in independent schools.
The Learning Designer is a key member of the Learning Innovation and Workforce Program Team, a centralised team within the Leadership and Learning portfolio that supports the design and delivery of high-quality professional learning across the organisation.
The role is responsible for collaborating with staff from all portfolios to create engaging, inclusive, and effective learning experiences across a variety of formats, including blended, hybrid, face-to-face, webinar, and self-paced modes.
With a strong foundation in adult learning principles, managing projects, and a contemporary approach to learning design, Learning Designers contribute to strategic initiatives across the organisation.
Key Accountabilities
Learning Design and Development
- Design, develop, and revise high-quality online learning experiences across a range of modalities, focusing primarily on self-paced, with potential to include blended, hybrid and webinars.
- Apply adult learning principles, inclusive design practices, and instructional frameworks to create engaging and effective learning.
- Design solutions compatible with assistive and accessible technologies for a range of audiences and the application of inclusive learning design.
- Produce a variety of learning artifacts including eLearning courses, audio, video, blended learning programs, and other resources.
- Stay current of new learning design trends, research, and have a mindset and commitment to constant improvement in your learning design.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
- Partner with stakeholders and subject matter experts across all portfolios as a trusted learner designer and advisor. Lead and project manage projects.
- Co-design and create innovative learning programs and artifacts that align with member and organisational priorities.
- Act as a trusted advisor and design partner, provide expert guidance on the most suitable learning formats and approaches.
- Build and maintain strong relationships across the organisation to ensure alignment between learning initiatives and broader business needs.
Continuous Improvement of Learning Initiatives
- Use learning systems, data, and evaluations to measure effectiveness and continuously improve learning outcomes.
Project Management
- Use a project-focused approach when managing learning initiatives from concept to delivery including using project briefs, scope and deliverables, timelines, and budgets.
- Proactively re-prioritise and re-plan work in response to project shifts in priorities, and timelines, managing risks and communicating impacts to stakeholders.
Operational Excellence
- Bring an operational excellence mindset, approaching learning design with care, discipline, and continuous improvement to deliver fit-for-purpose, high‑quality outcomes efficiently, consistently and on schedule.
- Use consistent and proven processes to design and develop professional, creative, and innovative learning to highest quality standards.
Teamwork and Collaboration
- Work in a team of learning designers, fostering collaboration, quality, and innovation.
Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge/Skills
Qualifications
- Qualifications in education, instructional design, organisational development, or a related discipline desirable.
What Experience are we looking for?
- 3 -5 years’ experience designing and delivering self-paced online learning. Experience in professional learning or training programs in corporate, educational or not-for-profit contexts would be highly regarded.

- Designs learning experiences across digital, virtual, and face‑to‑face contexts, including online, blended, and self‑paced delivery. Applies evidence‑based learning principles and contemporary design frameworks to create effective learning.

- Strong understanding of adult learning and engagement. Designs relevant, inclusive, and impactful learning using human‑centred design approaches to understand user needs, test ideas, and refine solutions.
Project and delivery capability
- Comfortable with managing multiple projects and deadlines, maintaining momentum in fast‑paced environments and adapting to changing priorities.
Creative and critical thinking
- Brings a design mindset to problem‑solving, thinking critically and visually to create engaging learning solutions aligned to organisational goals.
Digital tools and platforms
- Confident using LMSs, authoring tools, AI, multimedia, and other digital technologies to enhance learning design and delivery.
Communication and collaboration
- Communicates clearly and confidently, translating complex ideas into learner‑friendly content. Builds strong relationships with subject matter experts and works effectively across cross‑functional teams.
Facilitation and coaching
- Confident and comfortable designing learning in virtual settings. Can support and guide others in learning design practice.
Continuous improvement
- Uses data and feedback to evaluate learning effectiveness and continuously improve learning experiences.

- Operates with initiative, integrity, and sound judgement. Responsive, adaptable, and service‑oriented, with a strong commitment to purpose and outcomes.

- Designs for diverse learners, embedding accessibility standards and assistive technologies to ensure learning is inclusive and usable for all.
